Chung Ying Garden

Ethnic restaurants often get overlooked when it comes to handing out awards but this Cantonese restaurant boasts an AA rosette and listings in both the Good Food Guide and Hardens. Established in 1987, Chung Ying Garden offers a vast selection of dishes (including supposedly the most comprehensive Chinese menu in Britain) and seats 350 people over two floors in what was formerly the Thorp Street army barracks. World-famous for its three championship golf courses, The Belfry is a four-star golf, business and leisure resort set in 550 acres of beautiful West Midlands countryside, yet still conveniently close to Birmingham city centre. The 324-room hotel has a range of dining options, including the award-winning French Restaurant, which has wonderful views out over the Brabazon course. The restaurant is open Tuesday to Saturday evenings for dinner as well as Sunday lunch, and has its own cocktail bar where you can enjoy pre- or post-meal drinks. The restaurant dress code is smart and there is a choice of a la carte or table d’hote menus, both of which use the best locally sourced ingredients, including herbs grown in the hotel grounds. A typical meal might start with Sweet slow-braised Packington free range pork belly with sautéed Savoy cabbage and Granny Smith apple followed by Fillet of Herefordshire beef with caramelised shallots, sautéed mushrooms, chive crisp and boulangère potatoes and then end up with Cappuccino mousse and cinnamon sugared doughnuts. Situated in The Mailbox right in the heart of the city, Malmaison is the Birmigham outpost of this super-stylish chain of boutique hotels. The beautifully designed restaurant seats 100 diners and offers a traditional brasserie experience with a contemporary twist. Food is modern British with a French influence and is heavily focused on local ingredients. Aside from the main brasserie menu, Head Chef Patrick Harness has produced a ‘Homegrown & Local’ menu which showcases produce from regional suppliers, who are themselves profiled on the menu. The wine list is extensive, stretching to some 300 bins. Malmaison is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day and for special occasions can offer a private dining room. Set in the delightful surroundings of Edgbaston's listed Asquith House, Pascal's offers city dining with a country feel. Owner and manager Pascal Cuny has nearly two decades experience in restaurant management -- most recently with Michelin-starred Jessica's -- and with Head Chef Jennifer Goff running the kitchen has created an upmarket French dining experience.
