Built in 1895 as a private country residence, Langdale Chase stands in six acres of beautifully manicured grounds on the shores of Lake Windermere. It's got one of the longest garden frontages on the whole lake, making it a popular choice for weddings and the hotel has a license to hold civil ceremonies. Langdale Chase is full of character with ornate carved fireplaces, oak-panelled rooms, and an imposing oak staircase with minstrels' gallery. The bedrooms are all individually furnished, some with four-poster beds and jacuzzis, and with one unique room above the boathouse on the lake. Ambleside's Log House has a history as unique as its appearance. Victorian artist Alfred Heaton Cooper moved back to the UK from a stint in Norway in 1894 and brought with him -- as a studio -- this entire red-roofed log cabin. Now a restaurant with rooms, The Log House has recently has been taken over by husband-and-wife team Heath and Nicola Calman. Kiwi-born Heath trained with one of Australia's top chefs and has created a simple but exciting modern Mediterranean menu. The dining room has fantastic fell views to the rear and is open Tuesday through Sunday for lunch (from 12 noon) and dinner (from 6pm).
