Alverton Manor

Alverton Manor
1 Photo
An institution and one of the grandest buildings in Truro, here you will find some of the finest cooking in the county. Head Chef Keith Brookesbank has a fantastic background specialising in traditional English cuisine and is pulling together the very best seasonal and local produce available and turning it into some truly beautiful dishes. Having large grounds, this grade II-listed former convent keeps its own hens and grows its own herbs and vegetables. Meat is reared and butchered to order by a local farmer and fish comes in from the day boats from St Mawes and Falmouth. The newly refurbished, two-AA-rosette dining room is light and airy with high ceilings and views over the gardens. A real treat to stay or eat at, the building has historic interest for Truro and the hotel’s interior is full of character from the manager’s active interest in antiques and model railways. The wine list is one of the most comprehensive in Cornwall and goes from bright and breezy to fine and rare. Not just for that special occasion, Alverton is used as a premium place to lunch, hold business meetings, or just relax in impressive surroundings. ...Click here for Alverton Manor website

Atlantic Hotel & Waves Restaurant

Atlantic Hotel & Waves Restaurant
1 Photo
An oasis of top quality hospitality in Carbis Bay, located just outside St Ives with views over to Hayle and Godrevey, the Atlantic Hotel recently enjoyed a makeover and has plenty to shout about. The newly refurbished rooms offer a very comfortable and contemporary feel using light and earthy tones. Front of house Alison is customer driven and every guest’s need is catered for. Here the food and drink elements are instrumental to the operation and comprise a family oriented bar with flat screens, pool table and excellent bar menu which offers the same standards as the main Waves Restaurant (everything home made; breads, sauces, kids food and most importantly chips). The Waves restaurant raises the game with manager Peter Hodge who brings a wealth of experience with him from The Porthminster Beach Cafe. Head chef Jeff and his sous are young, passionate and hell bent on making their mark on the local dining scene. The team are sourcing the very finest produce that includes St Ives Beef, Cornish Duck and the best seafood. Producing everything from scratch every day. The 45 cover restaurant and bar features dark brown leather sofas, wood and in the evenings the candle-lit atmosphere creates the perfect setting for the food. There is a decked, raised al-fresco area popular day and night in the summer. ...Click here for Atlantic Hotel & Waves Restaurant website

Bickford Arms

Bickford Arms

This foodie gem is a lovely bolt hole in the heart of what has become known as Ruby Country, an area of very unspoilt Devon countryside that’s perfectly situated to explore the moors of Devon and the rugged north Cornish coast. This 4 Star AA inn is ideally located for a stop off if travelling to Devon or Cornwall for pleasure or business. The Bickford Arms recently enjoyed something of a rebirth after a fire gutted the 17th Century inn. The new building has been sympathetically restored to its original glory with modern comforts while retaining its traditional themes and features. This well-run operation is food driven and service oriented. Owner Nigel Kivell and his team strive to excel in every area of hospitality. There are five quality en-suite rooms named after members of the Bickford family that are modern, comfortable and each with its own character. The food and drink here are a definite draw and the bar area has slate floors, exposed beams and comfortable wood furniture. Real ales from around the Southwest include the championship beer ‘Betty Stogs’, premium lagers and a great wine list. The Bar Food menu features gastro classics and pub staples with a twist. Chalk boards offer daily specials all made from scratch using the best local produce. More formal dining can be had in the Dunsland dining room which seats up to 40 and can be hired for private dining, functions and weddings. A lovely, landscaped, al fresco area hosts lazy summer days and the colder winter nights draw people to the fabulous wood burner open fire in the bar. ...Click here for Bickford Arms website

Guests describe it as an extension of their living room. The food is very cosmopolitan as you would expect from a chef who has trained under Marco Pierre White and Gary Rhodes. A typical dish is Wild boar burger spiced with Grasmere gingerbread. Peter Sidwell has a book out at the moment entitled ‘Simply Good Taste’ as well as podcasts and a blog you can find on his website. The Navy Inn in Penzance is the kind of pub you have to be told about or you would never know what awaits you. It’s unassuming from the outside and tucked away on a quiet street but once inside its true nature is revealed; professional and knowledgeable staff, a well-stocked premium bar, great wine list and a secret al fresco area. It’s AA-rosetted with a passionate and experienced chef at the helm. Keir Meikle has a background with top establishments such as The Savoy and Antony Worrall Thompson. He has turned a run-down local into a relaxed and informal pub restaurant with original wooden floors, navy blue and off-white décor, a mixture of Moroccan and high-backed leather chairs and pews. Local artists’ work is also on display. Food-wise, Keir and second chef Jay produce extraordinary renditions of pub classics with a smattering of more modern and unusual dishes. Keir is really motivated by the quality of local produce available and says it’s a joy to cook with. There’s a consistently good Sunday lunch with beef from ‘St Ives Beef’, huge Yorkshires and properly made gravy. Superb vegetarian dishes which are exciting, amazing desserts and everything home made right down to the chips. ...Click here for Navy Inn website

The View

The View is situated on the cliffs of Whitsand Bay on the Rame Peninsular with comanding views out to sea, but close enough to the Torpoint ferry to be accessible for an evening meal if you’re coming from the Plymouth area. Run by Matt and Rachel Corner and their friendly team, The View is a superb choice for informal and relaxed high quality dining. Matt -- who has cooked at the highest level for 16 years and used to be head chef at the 3 AA rosette Well House near Liskeard -- jumped at the chance of running his own seafood restaurant. The 32-cover venue is bright and spacious with a light wood and white colour scheme and it offers ‘The View’ from all tables. Enjoy lunch either inside or out on the al fresco terrace with a great-value daily changing menu that offers lighter or more substantial versions of mussels, scallops or cod. There are also larger mains that feature that day’s catch or a meat choice. With everything being made from scratch on the premises and Matt’s confident cooking using the best sesasonal, local produce, this is a fabulous choice for superb modern British food that is stylishly presented. At night, the restaurant and its location become extremely atmospheric and you can enjoy an intimate meal from the daily changing menu and a stroll along the cliffs afterwards. ...Click here for The View website

A great place to eat and drink al fresco -- especially when one of the many yachting events is on. There is a permanent BBQ for the weekends (weather dependent) and plenty of covered and heated tables for people watching and soaking up the atmosphere. Head Chef Richard Nicholls is creating exciting and varied dishes using great local produce. The main menu is seasonal and includes pub classics as well as plenty of fish and seafood and more substantial dishes. There are specials such as fillet steak, seared tuna or scallops with black pudding. Inside there is a choice of tables downstairs and upstairs is one of the best dining rooms in town. Bright and spacious the room can seat around 70 diners with views. There is a private dining room/dinner party room for up to 30. There is also a Sunday Carvery as well as the other menus running.
