Good Taste is the brainchild of chef Peter Sidwell. On the one hand it’s a successful deli, café and restaurant on Keswick in Cumbria. On the other, a cookery school business that brings the Lakes into the kitchen and the kitchen into the Lakes. Good Taste the venue is on two levels – an upmarket deli-takeaway downstairs and a comfortable cafe upstairs that seats up to 30 on a mixture of couches and tables. Guests describe it as an extension of their living room. The food is very cosmopolitan as you would expect from a chef who has trained under Marco Pierre White and Gary Rhodes. A typical dish is Wild boar burger spiced with Grasmere gingerbread. Peter Sidwell has a book out at the moment entitled ‘Simply Good Taste’ as well as podcasts and a blog you can find on his website. The Holt is a cool and laid-back pub/restaurant that has been part of the Honiton scene since 2005. Here it’s all about quality and ethical and sustainable attention to detail -- even the menus are made from recycled hops, malt, yeast and beer labels. The Holt is a lovely conversion of an old school pub on two floors; downstairs is a bar with leather sofas and mixture of tables allowing a view through to the kitchen, upstairs there is a mezzanine and a full dining room, again with old schoolhouse furniture and eclectic graphic artwork. Run by Paul and Donna Berry for the last year, The Quarrymans Rest has just finished a programme of refurbishment. Located in the untouched and pretty village of Bampton, near Tiverton, the pub is the food-driven option in the area. Paul is a firm believer in bringing real British pub cuisine back and with Donna overseeing the front of house, the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. There is well-kept beer on the hand pumps as well as a guest local beer and a keen selection of wines from around the world. Paul’s previous pub,won county Dining Pub of the Year (in the good Pub Guide) twice, two AA rosettes, a Michelin Bib Gourmand and was mentioned in the Good Food Guide. Having built up a strong and loyal following of discerning diners at The Vanilla Pod in Torquay, Ian and Tracey Nixon moved the restaurant to The Cridford Inn earlier this year. Located in the picturesque village of Trusham, just outside Exeter in the Teign Valley, the building itself is one of the few remaining Devon Longhouses and dates back to the 14th century. They are still running the inn as a pub with rooms however the interior also houses The Vanilla Pod restaurant, a lovely space with original features including a mosaic date stone that lights up the centre of the floor.
