This beautiful red-brick 17th-century building lies in 63 acres of striking Hampshire parkland and was originally commissioned as a palace by Charles II and built by Wren. The three-AA-rosetted Avenue Restaurant is so named as the view from the restaurant and bar windows gives a direct line of perspective down a mile-long causeway of lime trees -- the longest in England – planted in 1716. The kitchen team is headed up by Andy MacKenzie who has been instrumental in the evolution of the kitchen and its gardens, which are are key to what is happening here at Lainston. It is Andy’s goal to have as much as possible of the menu’s ingredients sourced directly from the hotel’s grounds and the ethos of the kitchen works toward this goal. It’s becoming a place of pilgrimage for high-end food and drink lovers with Andy having taken the Hampshire Chef of the Year award for 2007.
