Barocco's Italian restaurant and wine bar in Fence, near Burnley, is located on the site of what was the Forest Inn. The stylish interior has room for 130 diners with an additional al fresco area available during the summer months. There are plenty of intimate spaces too, perfect for a romantic meal out. The menu has plenty of specials and an emphasis on fresh fish.

The Bay Horse Inn in Higham -- or Fence, depending on which way you look at it -- is located in a picturesque rural part of Burnley. Nearby you'll find Pendle Hill and the famous Pendle Witch Trail. On entering the pub, you're in the main bar area where you can get bar snacks, a variety of drinks and guest ales. Or you can opt for the 50-cover restaurant which serves traditional pub food that's a cut above run-of-the-mill pub grub. The house's signature dishes include Chilli beef as a starter and No Name chicken for main course, served with Serrano ham and cream. The prices are reasonable - around £5 for a starter and £11.50 for a main course. The Bay Horse has a kids menu too and is known for its pleasant atmosphere. Dugdales is the restaurant at Burnley's Rosehill House Hotel. This elegant stone mansion, which was built in 1856 by a wealthy mill-owner, is set in a quiet residential area of the town and has been a hotel since 1963. It's named after the original tenant - Adam Dugdale -- and the restaurant serves a Modern British menu daily at both lunch and dinner. The hotel has 31 individually styled en-suite bedrooms, a large bar with an amazing Italianate ceiling, a snooker room and two dining areas, one of which is the conservatory and the other a more formal, wood-panelled affair. The hotel is also licensed to hold civil weddings and has three function rooms. It's the perfect venue to to while away the whole evening, dining and relaxing in fine style.

The Hare and Hounds is situated on the outskirts of Burnley in the little hamlet of Briarcliife overlooking a panorama of green fields. It's been around since the 16th century as a plaque commemorating a nearby civil war skirmish attests. In the pub itself there is a bar area and a games room with pool table and games machines. There is also a separate dining area called The Heath Restaurant with views out over the countryside. Run by a husband-and-wife team, the Hare and Hounds serves seasonal lunches (check ahead) and bar snacks on a Friday and Saturday as well as the main restaurant menu in the evening. The Hare and Hounds is well known for its hearty portions and it has a Cask Marque excellence award for its real ales. Tuesday night is quiz night.

This restaurant and pizzeria is situated in a large, imposing sandstone building with its own car park in Padiham, near Burnley. There's a separate takeaway section (Captain Nino), licensed bar and an al fresco dining area with fountain perfect for the summer months. In addition to the main a la carte menu there is always a choice of daily specials available. There is also a kids menu for under-12s with a free lollipop included. Sylvia and Nino promise you a friendly welcome.

The Red Lantern Chinese Restaurant is in the heart of Burnley, opposite the famous Bridge pub and next to the Charter Walk car park. There has been a Chinese restaurant here on this site for 20 years - it used to be known as The Regent - but new owners have changed the name and given it a complete refurb. They have a wealth of experience in the restaurant trade - they ran Manchester's famous Charlie Chan's in the 1970s -- and the food here is mainly Cantonese but with Szechuan and Thai specialities as well as low-calorie dishes. The entrance is at street level with the 60-cover restaurant down at basement level. The Red Lantern is open from 5pm-11pm six days a week, closed Tuesdays.

Located on Main Street in Barrowford, the modern interior of Zio Ristorante disguises the authentic Italian kitchen brigade inside. Zio's menu contains many of the classic Italian regional dishes you would expect to find, but also dishes that would not seem out of place on a traditional Sunday in Lancashire, such as slow cooked lamb shank. The specials menu changes weekly; a typical starter would be a dish of steamed fillet of cod served cold with compote of red onion with a pesto and lemon mayo, or fillets of red snapper with mussels and prawns as a main course. Pizzas range from the simple Acciughe (anchovies, onions, fresh chilli, oregano and tomato) to the Mamma Mia (salame, meatballs, Tuscan sausage, tomato and mozzarella). The chefs can produce any combination of pasta or sauce and if they have the ingredients to hand, then it can be made to your special recipe. Nothing is too much trouble for the front-of-house staff or the kitchen, which makes for a relaxing evening out, whether it's a cosy intimate table for two or a boisterous party table of ten.
