Nine miles north of York, this 200-year-old pub has built up a fantastic reputation for its food and boasts an AA rosette, a Michelin bib gourmand and an entry in the Good Food Guide. The bistro-style menu is built upon fresh, local produce with seafood a speciality. There's also a marked Med influence here with the risotto a popular choice. The choice of wines and real ales is plentiful and there is a garden to the rear that's used in the summer months. Husband-and-wife team Simon and Rena Gueller have made quite an impact at the Box Tree. This Ilkley restaurant has for some 40 years enjoyed a reputation as one of the north's best restaurants -- but within just four months of the Guellers taking over the reins in autumn 2004, the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star. Simon (ex-Rascasse, Guellers) is one of Yorkshire's most accomplished chefs and at the Box Tree he has put together a modern take on classical French cooking with an emphasis on locally sourced produce, complemented by an extensive wine list.
