The Horse & Jockey has long been a fixture of the Chorlton scene but this was a pub that traditionally attracted more drinkers than diners. All that changed at the end of 2008 when new owners Peter Dalton and Simon Davis took over, undertaking a complete refurbishment and reopening the Horse & Jockey as a family- and female-friendly venue serving great food and aimed squarely at the local market. Peter Dalton was the man behind some groundbreaking bars in both Manchester and London in the 1990s, including Manto, and this new venture has a warm and laid-back feel with open fires, Victorian tiling, Yorkshire stone floors, Persian rugs and comfy furniture. A new extension has been added which houses part of the dining room and the heated beer garden area enjoys great views out over Chorlton Green. Food is served seven days a week from 12 noon until 10pm and is locally sourced where possible. Typical starters and mains might include Ham and rabbit terrine and Slow roasted boned breast of lamb. Lighter bites are available at lunch and there is a good choice of wines and cask ales. There are also plans to reintroduce the microbrewery which once existed on the site.

The cuisine is best described as English and Continental, decidedly not Modern British, and with more of an old-school appeal to it. Steaks, ribs and the signature beef hash are massively popular here but the menu changes with the seasons and is complemented by an outstanding wine selection that is one of the best in Manchester and indeed the northwest. The nearby Mr Thomas's Chop House is a sister establishment along with a second Sam's Chop House that opened in Leeds in 2007.

Chris Yates, the new owner/chef at the Shoulder of Mutton in Holcombe Village, has worked in some of the northwest's best kitchens including Nutters in Rochdale, Paul Heathcote's Longridge Restaurant and The Dining Room in Rawtenstall. He also came 4th out of 5,000 in the Gordon Ramsay Scholarship. He's now taken over the reins at the Shoulder of Mutton, a famous country pub that has been a fixture in the Ramsbottom area for two centuries. The pub enjoys a beautiful location and the warm and cosy interior is a welcome haven, particularly if you can snag the table in front of the log fire. The menu, which changes with the seasons, offers a modern take on traditional pub food with a specials board that changes daily, depending on what Chris can pick up at the market. It's good-value too with most dishes under a tenner.

One of North-West England's top Dining Pubs, the award-winning Fisherman's Retreat is nestled away in Twine Valley, three miles east of Ramsbottom, at the edge of the Pennine Hills. The valley was initially purchased in 1981 and used for rearing beef cattle until nine years later it was diversified to a trout fishery. Today the pub is surrounded by 80 acres of its own land and it's here where much of the beef, pork, venison and lamb that appear on the menu are reared. Now a destination restaurant in its own right, The Fisherman's Retreat menu features a wide selection of traditional and modern British dishes, with an occasional international influence -- all freshly prepared using traceable produce. Whether it is the reputation for its dry-aged steaks that many claim to be the best in the country, the trout caught daily from the on-site fishery, or the chips that are made to order from real potatoes, this truly is a unique dining experience. Complementing the world-famous cask ales on offer are some 500 bottles of single malt whiskies, all available by the bottle or as a wee dram. The organised whisky tasting evenings (October to March) are a huge success with demand outstripping ticket sales. Awards | Taste Lancashire

The award of a Michelin Bib Gourmand in January 2007 was the latest accolade for The Waggon At Birtle on Bury and Rochdale Old Road. Chef proprietor David Watson came from a Michelin-starred background (ex-Pool Court in Leeds) and returned to his roots to open the Waggon with wife Lorraine in 2002. Housed in a former pub, the premises were completely refurbished to create a smart 50-cover bistro with a 25-cover function room above. The food is Modern British with a slight French influence but relies heavily on fresh local produce; hence dishes like the Tempura of Chadwick's Bury black pudding with Lancashire cheese, apple and bacon and mustard vinaigrette. The main a la carte menu (7 startes, 7 mains, 7 desserts) changes every three months whilst the good-value Market Menu is updated every fortnight. The Three Crowns Inn & Restaurant is situated a thousand feet up on the moors at Scouthead, near Saddleworth. It's almost exactly halfway between Chester and York and for many years was an overnight stop for prisoners on the way to the Assizes. Originally a row of weavers' cottages, the pub retains a cottagey feel and head chef Andrew McDonald has put together a traditional English a la carte menu, supplemented with a large seafood specials board, a table d'hote, a senior citizens menu and a kids menu. You can eat in one of three dining areas - a quiet 'locals' area set off the main bar, a country-style dining room and the traditional bar lounge.
