Blackfriars Restaurant lays claim to be the oldest purpose-built restaurant in the UK, dating back to 1239 when it was a refectory for the 'Black Friars'. Today it's one of the north east's most high-profile restaurants with a string of accolades to its name, including an AA rosette and Metro's Restaurant of the Year award as well as being voted Best Restaurant in the North East by the Observer. The dining room is on two levels, with inglenooks and corners allowing diners to enjoy an intimate meal. In summer, the original medieval courtyard is used for al fresco dining. The Newcastle Marriott Hotel Gosforth Park is splendidly located in the midst of 12 acres of parkland, yet close to both the city centre and the airport. Awarded a Michelin star in January 2007, The White Room at Seaham Hall is a showcase for Steve Smith's innovative modern European cooking. The only UK chef to have won a star with three different restaurants, Steve offers a la carte and a menu du jour options as well as a 10-course tasting menu. The food is ably accompanied by a 500-bin wine selection that is stored in the hall's original cellars (which can be viewed on request). Seaham Hall is also home to the Serenity Spa. Connected to the hotel by an underground walkway, this state-of-the-art, 40,000-square-foot facility opened in 2002 and is classed as one of the best spas in the UK and Europe.
