Bridge Street Restaurant

1 photo
Bridge Street Restaurant in Newhaven has been open for business since April 2007, owned and run by fisherman Frank Shaw together with his wife and Head Chef Michelle. The cosy 40-cover restaurant has a traditional coastal feel – its walls bedecked with authentic maritime oddities, original paintings and prints. But it’s the food Frank would rather talk about (and talk he will!). Fresh local produce is the order of the day here -- quality meat supplied by a traditional butcher supplements the daily catch and there are further plans to grow their own vegetables. Regular visitors from Brighton, Eastbourne and further afield are testament to the fine cooking of quality ingredients, while menu prices remain surprisingly attractive. Open evenings only, Tuesday to Saturday and for functions by arrangement. Booking is advisable. ...more information

Cassons Restaurant

1 photo
Cassons in Tangmere is one of those inviting places you often pass at 70mph and wonder what it might be like inside. Well, ‘inspired food in relaxed surroundings’ is how Viv and Cass, the co-owners, like to describe their restaurant. Rave reviews in the local press and a host of regular customers would seem to endorse this view. Viv is also head chef and with a Michelin-starred background the quality of food is assured. A set lunch and evening A La Carte and Table d’Hote menus offer unrivalled choice; and keep an eye out for the monthly themed gourmet evenings. A modern European menu with a seafood bias is served in a friendly, convivial atmosphere – Cass runs the front of house and is famously congenial. And a comprehensive wine list includes a superb ‘owner’s choice’ selection. ...more information

Exceat Farmhouse

1 photo
Traditional and Farmhouse are the words that immediately spring to mind when describing Exceat Farmhouse. It's set within the Seven Sisters Country Park, and the 17th century grade II listed building houses the restaurant itself. Fully licensed, a small wine list supplements country farmhouse food – hearty fare all freshly made on the premises. The charming rustic interior seats 30 with another 40 or so outside in the courtyard. Open for breakfast, lunch and cream teas with home-made cakes, there are further facilities for corporate lunches, private parties, wedding receptions and civil ceremonies. Bed & Breakfast accommodation is also available. ...more information

Graze Restaurant

Open since mid-2006, Graze on Western Road is Brighton & Hove’s first taster restaurant and an exciting addition to the local dining scene. The menu consists of a wide range of smaller dishes, all expertly created by head chef Adrian Geddes, from which you create your own dining experience - a sort of global tapas. Alternatively, put your trust in one of the set evening menus ranging from 5 to 9 courses. All produce is fresh each day, sourced locally wherever possible and an extensive drinks menu includes a large selection of first-rate wines from around the world. The modern, Regency-inspired interior attracts a discerning foodie crowd, with downstairs available for private dining and parties. ...more information

Jali

1 photo
Located in the seafront Chatsworth Hotel in Hastings, Jali is a fine dining Indian restaurant that boasts an AA rosette for its cooking. The menu, although Indian, is a far cry from your typical curry house fare with dishes such as Meen Moilee (fish chunks in a curry leaf-scented coconut milk sauce) and Tawa Jhinga Masala (prawns stir fried in a mildly spiced masala with peppers and onions). The Pan Flash Bazaar section of the menu lets you mix and match ingredients and sauces in the typical Indian 'kiosk' cooking style. Jali also offers a takeaway service ...more information

La Locanda Del Duca

La Locanda Del Duca first opened its doors to the public in 2004, following the success of its sister restaurant Pomodoro e Mozzarella. Based on the same winning formula, La Locanda is aimed at a slightly more exclusive clientele. Tastefully decorated and with a capacity of 80 or so, the restaurant is a firm favourite with Eastbourne’s theatre-goers; watch out for the stars when the tennis is on. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, a robust wine list complements traditional Italian fare – the fish and risotto dishes being particularly well regarded. All produce is fresh each day and the desserts and ice cream are home made at Pomodoro – just two doors away. ...more information

Leonardo Restaurant

Since opening in 1996, Leonardo on Hove's Church Road has established itself as one of the Sussex coast's most popular Italians. So much so, that they have recently taken over the premises next door and are in the process of expanding. Leonardo is a traditional family run restaurant but is fitted out in contemporary style with photos of movie stars adorning the walls. The pasta here is home made and as well as good choice of pizzas, the restaurant specializes in meat and fish dishes. The wine list is all-Italian and the set menus at lunch and dinner are good value. ...more information

Momma Cherri's Big House

1 photo
Momma Cherri’s Big House needs little introduction to Brightoners. Tucked away in the Lanes, Momma and the staff have been serving American Soul Food since 2001. Based on recipes originated by slaves in America’s Deep South, the food is wholesome, varied and exceedingly tasty. In addition to the standard lunch and dinner menus there are “Soul in a Bowl” Tapas and party menus; the latter consisting of a chef’s choice of either 10 or 14 bowls for sharing. In 2006 due to its increasing popularity – aided no doubt by a televised visit from Gordon Ramsay – Momma Cherri’s moved to larger premises just a couple of doors away, where the family friendly restaurant is now arranged over two floors, and can cater for over 100 diners. Momma Cherri's opens at 5pm so is perfect for a pre-theatre meal. ...more information

Pilgrims

1 photo
Nestling in the shadow of Battle’s historic abbey, Pilgrims Lounge Bar and Dining Rooms simply reeks of history and tradition. Originally a 12th-century monastic ‘hospital’ the building was updated to its current form in 1420 and still retains many period features. It seems only right that the menu is predominantly British; created around seasonal, fresh local produce and cooked to a very high standard. The food is complemented by a truly excellent wine list which extends to more than 80 bins and includes some very special and unusual Lebanese labels. The downstairs areas can be arranged to seat between 40 and 70 diners with extra seating available in the garden. An upstairs room is also available for private dining. ...more information

Pintxo People

Brighton's Pintxo People was one of the hottest openings of 2006, attracting rave reviews in both the local and national press. Executive Chef Miguel Jessen -- who comes from a two-Michelin-starred background at Madrid's El Amparo -- has developed for the first-floor restaurant an exciting modern Catalan menu with dishes -- in true Spanish style -- designed for sharing (they recommend five plates between two people). The ground floor houses a cafe, deli and an award-winning cocktail bar and here you can enjoy their bite-size pintxos for just £1. Building on Brighton's success, a new London restaurant -- Pinchito has opened near Old Street tube in The City. ...more information

Pomegranate

Following the success of their award-winning Ararat restaurants in Dallas and Austin in Texas, Hasan Tunc and his wife Zelal have now landed in Kemp Town. Hasan is well known in the art world with a gallery in Seattle, Washington but also trained as a chef in France. His two worlds collide in Pomegranate’s recipes which are quite unique – Hasan describes them as “elevated from traditional Middle Eastern cuisine.” And unsurprising is a liberal use of pomegranates in the cooking and also as decoration. Fresh organic ingredients, sourced locally wherever possible, are accompanied by a well chosen wine list. Original paintings adorn the walls of the small, friendly restaurant which is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. ...more information

Famed locally for providing excellent food at reasonable prices, this family friendly restaurant seats 140 in a refreshingly unpretentious setting. It won awards for hospitality as well as ‘Business of the Year’ in 2003 and you are assured a warm welcome. Situated within the Chequers hotel in Pulborough, Sovereigns Restaurant provides a warm welcome to locals, regulars and tourists alike. Head chef Nathan Green has put together a quality international menu, in addition to which a lunchtime carvery is now available daily (it’s extra special on Sunday!). Open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant houses a traditional dining area, extended by a large conservatory to seat 60 with further seating outside in the patio area and garden. Terre à Terre

The New York Times recently described Brighton's Terre à Terre as "the finest vegetarian restaurant on the south coast of England. . .a truly outstanding choice." It's no exaggeration and if you've never really given vegetarian food a chance, this is the place to explode your preconceptions. Terre à Terre boasts two AA rosettes and a Michelin bib gourmand and you can expect intense flavours, sublime textures and daring combination of ingredients. The fact that there's no meat on the menu is secondary. In business for 15 years now, the restaurant is open every day except Monday from noon til close offering a variety of menus, including their new take on Afternoon Tea -- the Teas, Stickies & Bickies menu. The extensive wine list is entirely organic with many biodynamic choices. ...more information

The Blacksmiths Restaurant

1 photo
Blacksmiths Restaurant in Battle resides within a lovely 15th-century oak-beamed building at the top end of the High Street and is the town’s longest-established restaurant. Owner and Chef Martin Howe took over the premises in 1981 since when he has been serving his own take on a traditional British menu. Seasonal produce is sourced locally wherever possible and a successful balancing act sees many regular customers sitting alongside tourists and visitors from far and wide (for the latter, Martin and his wife can also provide first class B&B accommodation). A well-stocked bar and friendly service round off what is always a thoroughly pleasant dining experience. ...more information

The Dining Room

The Dining Room at Purchases could neatly be described as a one-stop-shop for Chichester foodies. The restaurant proper has been open since 2001 and is well established as one of the finest in the city. Proprietor and chef Neil Rusbridger has put together a first class modern menu using quality ingredients and a wealth of experience. A clue to its location, 31 North is the name for the separately branded bar, serving Champagne, wine and cocktails, while Tapas @ 31 North pretty much does what is says on the tin. And then there is Provisions, the in-house delicatessen. Selling fine wines and fine foods, it also serves coffee and pastries in the morning and light bites to take out. ...more information

The Dolphin

1 photo
The Dolphin on Littlehampton’s High Street is a most unusual place. A traditional friendly pub which champions good old fashioned values, the interior is swamped with eclectic memorabilia; everything from The Titanic to WWII via Elvis and trains! The home of LIGHT (Littlehampton Investigative Ghost Hunting Team), The Dolphin is unsurprisingly haunted, although not by Lord Byron who sojourned here in the early 1800s. B&B Accommodation is available from £25pp and there is regular live music. Oh yes, the food is highly recommended too. Traditional pub fare is served lunchtime Tuesday-Sunday. Specials are available daily and the Sunday roast in particular is huge and delicious. ...more information
