The Elephant, Torquay
The Elephant Restaurant & Brasserie in Torquay has been delighting the diners of Torbay since 2003. It's situated on Torquay's Harbour, overlooking the bay and marina, and is housed in two converted former Georgian terraced houses. The Elephant covers two floors and now has two restaurants as well as a very relaxing cocktail lounge. The decor throughout is sumptuous and inviting, whilst every effort has been made in the conversion to retain the original features of the houses, which are listed buildings. On the ground floor is a 50-seater brasserie serving simply prepared locally sourced food in a relaxed environment. The atmosphere is lively and classy with dark stained oak tables and floors. The menu comprises old favourites as well as some new and exciting brasserie dishes. It's perfect for informal meals, lunches, party reservations for up to 60 people and is also building a reputation for Sunday Lunch.
Upstairs is where the culinary action heats up. The Elephant's fine dining restaurant, The Room in The Elephant, is 24 covers and only opens in the evenings. There is a comfortable cocktail lounge attached for pre-dinner drinks and canapes. From here the restaurant is just a few steps away. The decor is refined and relaxed but the star of the show is the view from both the bar and the restaurant. Torbay is spread before you with its magnificent lights and marina. The bar also boasts a full on licence so if just want to pop in for a drink you can. Head Chef Simon Hulstone and his wife Katy have been managing The Elephant now for more than two years and Simon's training has included stints at restaurants all over the world. His cooking is of the highest quality and only the best ingredients are sourced to give his dishes the best possible flavour and presentation. Simon is a former winner of The Roux Scholarship and also has an impressive list of competition wins to his name. The Room has a set price menu of modern British cuisine with canapes, bread and coffee with petit fours all included. If you are feeling adventurous you can also dine from a six-course tasting menu. The wine list is well chosen and includes a combination of classic regional old world wines as well as some excellent wines from the new world.
