About The Abingdon Arms

The Abingdon Arms at Beckley boasts spectacular views out across Otmoor nature reserve, prime walking country which inspired the likes of Lewis Carroll and Evelyn Waugh. It’s also a great escape from the centre of Oxford, just four miles away. This community-owned pub dates back to the 17th century and makes the most of its location with ample seating inside and out. The bar is open seven days a week and food-wise they have bar snacks on a Monday and Tuesday, pizzas from the wood-fired oven on Wednesdays, the seasonal a la carte available Thursday to Saturday and their famous Sunday Roast which draws in the crowds. The Abingdon Arms also runs a regular schedule of events throughout the year.

Lovely food. Staff very helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable evening

Disappointing meal yesterday. My sea bass was a tiny fillet and the veg consisted of 3 overcooked roast potatoes, very greasy mixture of parsnip and carrots and a little broccoli. Have had the catch of the day before which was much nicer and served with more appropriate fresh vegetables. Very noisy too as a couple of ladies groups were there too and enjoyed themselves at the top of their voices which meant my brother in law could not hear our own conversation. We really like this pub and would like to think that it will return to better food standards in future.

We both had cashew nut curry but were disappointed as it arrived only reasonably warm so sent the food back to be reheated. We had Jude’s salted caramel ice cream in pots which had very little flavour and not a patch on the ice cream you used to serve in scoops. Think it’s time to have new menus as these dishes seem to have been offered for more than a year.

I wish I’d read some of the reviews before booking our lunch yesterday. The welcome was lukewarm warm as was the food. I really feel that you could with a little effort make a big difference. Please try.

We stumbled across The Abingdon Arms by accident as somewhere to stop for lunch on a long journey home and we are so pleased we did! We lived the local feel to the pub and enjoyed sitting out in the garden! The menu was well priced and included some classic and more unusual options! We enjoyed the food and atmosphere and if passing again, we would visit again!

We 4 older ladies booked for lunch yesterday (Monday) the pub was very quiet but within 30 mins was really busy! We thought that amazing on a Monday! 2 of us were disappointed the fish pie was sold out but when we asked -the waitress said they had salmon and roast potatoes with spring veg! We loved it! One had the vegetarian cottage pie and the other had the Pate as a main course! They were both thrilled! We wanted the Apple& Pear crumble and Custard but that was sold out as well! But we had the warm brownie with ice cream! It was delicious! We had a lovely leisurely 3 hour lunch we thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you .

We had Sunday lunch with 2 friends. Our food did not arrive for over an hour and was not hot. The food itself was not bad but crammed onto a too small plate. It was obvious that the place was understaffed in the kitchen and serving. This seems odd because they must know how many lunches they will have to serve and should be better prepared. With pubs closing at an alarming rate it is vital that to survive they must offer an experience which exceeds expectations or people will simply not go. It would be a shame to see a beautiful pub like the Abingdon Arms under pressure when they could address these issues with better management and preparation.

Had Sunday lunch which we all thought as “just about ok” . Nice pub, service a bit slow , but we all thought the manager was abrupt and v customer unfriendly.

We had a very nice lunch on Monday 4 May. The food was excellent as always and the atmosphere as we expected, being regular visitors. However, we were not pleased with the attitude of one of our servers who was rather brusque, bordering on rude at times. In her defence we believe that understaffing was the main cause as there were only two members of staff serving a pretty full house. As going out to lunch is now seen as a bit of a luxury to many people the overall experience should be beyond expectations and not fall short as this did.
