The Arundell Arms Hotel has long been a standout choice as a base for a Devon break with its strong sporting links and fishing connections. Using only the finest quality produce which is sourced from local suppliers, Steven has gained an excellent reputation both locally and nationally for creating outstanding modern British cuisine. Expect seasonal menus, lunch is available in the bar or restaurant with a choice of lighter bites or more substantial dishes on a set menu. Dinner offers a set three course menu at £39.50 or the accomplished A la Carte which features starters such as grilled fillet of wild Black Bream with a sauce of brown shrimps, lentils and wild garlic or braised pork cheeks with thyme mash, apple fritter and cider sauce and mains like poached fillet of free range chicken with Savoy cabbage, courgette flowers, cream and tarragon leaves and roasted rump of English Lamb with herb crust, fondant potato, baby broad beans and a mint jus. The newly refreshed Courthouse Bar, annexed to the hotel, serves delicious home cooked food under the direction of Steven Pidgeon. The menu features pub favourites as well as a regularly changing 'Specials Board' with exciting meat, game, poultry, and fish dishes. They serve well-kept local and regional real ales and also have a great-value list of wines available by the glass and bottle. Don’t be fooled by its pub guise, this is one of the most accomplished restaurants in Devon, located on the outskirts of Exeter, it is a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Passionate head chef Matthew Mason, who cut his teeth at Le Manoir and Gidleigh heads the kitchen team (check out Matt’s monthly recipes here). This is a quality, well-oiled machine that extols the virtues of top quality local seasonal produce and delivers results at every turn. James Duckett at the Old Custom House occupies a wonderful, historic building in the centre of Barnstaple on the Strand, overlooking the river Taw. Since opening in August 2008, James and his team have established the Restaurant as a destination, fine dining venue. The food is of the highest quality; all prepared on the premises with great flare using the finest local produce and reflecting the impressive background and experience of the chef who has worked with some great chefs like Albert and Michel Roux, Marcus Wareing and Philip Howard. Lunches are informal and relaxed, served tapas style with some 15 or so dishes from which to choose. In the fine weather you can eat outside at the south facing front of the restaurant on the Strand or in the private rear courtyard. Dinner, in either the downstairs restaurant or upstairs panelled dining room, is a true fine dining affair with James's dishes lovingly prepared and served. The original Tabbs restaurant was situated in Portreath on the north coast of Cornwall. Now relocated, Tabbs Truro proudly opened its doors in November 2005 after a labour of love to completely rework what was a run down local pub. Now their customers old and new can access Nigel's accomplished cooking and hospitality more easily. With weekly changing menus that reflect the best of seasonal and local produce, Tabbs is one of the best restaurants in Truro. The View is situated on the cliffs of Whitsand Bay on the Rame Peninsular with comanding views out to sea, but close enough to the Torpoint ferry to be accessible for an evening meal if you’re coming from the Plymouth area. Run by Matt and Rachel Corner and their friendly team, The View is a superb choice for informal and relaxed high quality dining. Matt -- who has cooked at the highest level for 16 years and used to be head chef at the 3 AA rosette Well House near Liskeard -- jumped at the chance of running his own seafood restaurant. The 32-cover venue is bright and spacious with a light wood and white colour scheme and it offers ‘The View’ from all tables. Enjoy lunch either inside or out on the al fresco terrace with a great-value daily changing menu that offers lighter or more substantial versions of mussels, scallops or cod. There are also larger mains that feature that day’s catch or a meat choice. With everything being made from scratch on the premises and Matt’s confident cooking using the best sesasonal, local produce, this is a fabulous choice for superb modern British food that is stylishly presented.
