Hest Bank Inn
The Hest Bank Inn has a history stretching back to 1544 when it was first licensed to brew mead ale, sack and honey beer, sell cooked game and hold a cockfight once a week. It’s situated three miles up the coast from Morecambe, right beside the Lancaster Canal and close to the A6, and during the last four years it’s seen a real turnaround in fortunes, winning North West Food Pub of the Year in the Great British Pub Awards and being selected by the Guardian in its ‘10 Places to Eat on the North West Coast’. The reasons are twofold – namely Robert Glenn and Robert Marshall-Slater, who took over the pub after successful careers training the chefs of the future at Lancaster & Morecambe College. They have put together an honest pub menu with starters such as Morecambe Bay shrimps and Baked flat-cap mushroom and mains like Steamed venison and beef pudding and Lancashire hot pot. A daily specials board offers fresh fish selected daily from Fleetwood Market. They also offer a take-out service although it’s restricted to just one dish – Fish & Chips. The pub itself is a rambling affair with different rooms and levels and in summer the canalside location really comes into its own. No accommodation here but the nearby Gateway at Hest Bank is a local B&B that comes highly recommended.
