The Bold Hotel in Southport is situated right on Lord Street, famously the inspiration for Paris’s wide boulevards. It’s conveniently located close to the Floral Hall, Southport Promenade and the Arts Centre. Behind the imposing exterior is a hotel, bar and a restaurant which serves traditional British cuisine and there is a choice between the bar menu and various restaurant menu. The Bold Hotel also has a very popular al fresco dining area that seats up to 100 people and offers great views along Bold Street. The hotel has 23 bedrooms, all ensuite, some of which have been recently refurbished. There is also a large function room which is ideal for weddings and large parties.

Southport’s brand-new four star Ramada Plaza Hotel has a fantastic location, close to busy Lord Street but enjoying splendid views out over the Irish Sea. Facilities include 133 bedrooms, a fitness suite, meeting and function rooms and the bright and airy Marine Brasserie which has its own sun terrace. The menu offers plenty of choice ranging from light snacks – served from 11am until 10pm – to dishes firmly based on quality local produce including sweet-cured lamb from H Greaves & Son, Fleetwood smoked mackerel, Goosnargh duck pressing, Reg Johnson’s smoked pork belly and a choice of grill steaks, burgers and beer-battered cod with homemade chips. The brasserie welcomes both hotel guests and non-residents and prices are very reasonable.

The new 120-cover Exchange Restaurant at Liverpool’s Hilton Hotel is built on the site of the old 17th century custom house and enjoys a prime location right on the waterfront. Executive Chef Matt Burns worked under both Gordon Ramsay and Joel Robuchon in Paris and has created an exciting modern British menu that’s firmly grounded on top-quality local produce. Pan-seared Fleetwood ‘Artemis’ day boat turbot is served with roasted and shaved fennel and crab tortellini and bisque and named after the trawler it’s caught from. Braised and roasted Pennine venison comes with slow-cooked faggot, baby turnips and mulled pears and there is a good selection of 32-day-aged steaks and a great choice of artisan northern cheeses that are served with homemade chutney. The wine list offers options from across the globe and champagnes ranging from £50 to £800. The Exchange is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week and also does a special Sunday Roast.

The Renshaw Grill is located in the boutique Renshaw Hotel, together they have brought a slice of stateside sophistication to Liverpool city centre. This upmarket bar and grill was designed by movie produce and set designer Phil Evers and the investment has paid dividends. It can accommodate 85 diners over two levels with dark wood floors and black leather seating on one floor and distinctive black and white tiling on the other. The a la carte menu offers a range of upmarket grill classics with dishes like Surf & Turf, BBQ ribs, 21-day aged steaks, gourmet burgers and the TRG Cobb salad. There is also a special kids menu as well as good choice of wines and cocktails. The Renshaw Grill is open from 8am-10pm for food but is licensed until midnight 7 days.
