The Casa Italia pizzeria and pastificcio is one of Liverpool's longest-established eateries and has been in business for more than 30 years. Over the past three decades the likes of Paul McCartney, Liam Gallagher, Kylie Minogue and Robbie Williams have all graced Casa Italia's tables. Popular both day and night it is open right through from noon until 10pm. All food is prepared on the premises right down to the home made pizza. There is an extensive wine list comprising of at least 20 different varieties of wine from all over Italy. Prices start at £2 a glass.

Housed in an elegant Victorian building on Lord Street, Southport’s Casa Italia has been a feature of the local dining scene since 1978. It’s a relaxed and informal venue with its own unique décor and style and is family owned and run. 'Fifty One' is housed in a beautiful Victorian building on the promenade, opposite Southport's Theatre and Floral Hall. Within its first year of opening, Little Pizza Kitchen in Waterloo has picked up a prestigious Gold Award at the National Pizza, Pasta and Italian Food Awards. Judges cited the restaurant’s food, service and overall ambience. As well as offering a range of thin crust stone baked pizzas which are made with fresh dough every day, there is a selection of pasta dishes and main courses -- even the Pea Wack risotto, their take on a local classic. Everything is home made, including the bread, ice creams and desserts, and specific dietary requirements can be catered for. A special kids menu is available too offering pizza or pasta, unlimited juice and a scoop of ice cream. Little Pizza Kitchen, as the name suggests, seats just 25 diners and is open seven days a week from 5pm to 10pm, with last orders at 9pm. They also do takeaway.

Pietra is an Italian restaurant in South Road, Waterloo, that serves contemporary Italian cuisine. The centrepiece of the restaurant is an imported Italian stone-based oven that is fueled using hard wood. This gives a beautiful charcoal-like flavour to the pizzas, breads and roasted meats. The restaurant is modern in design, yet comfortable, with spacious booths and funky lighting giving the restaurant a trendy feel. September will see the opening of Prego in Liverpool One, an Italian/Mediterranean restaurant and sister venue to the popular Prego restaurant in Aintree.

Liverpool’s Prego Restaurant is ideally situated close to Aintree racecourse and the Switch Island junction of the M57 and M58. It’s a spacious and airy venue with a cocktail bar and restaurant and space for 250 diners. The owner hails from southern Italy and the Italian/Mediterranean menu has a southern Italian influence. There is a range of speciality pizzas prepared in an authentic wood-stone pizza oven including a sweet pizza made with marshmallows and nutella. Lots of pasta options too, including seafood choices. Drink options include Italian beers, cocktails prepared by a resident ‘mixologist’ and an extensive wine list including a special champagne selection from Veuve Clicquot. Prego is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Friday and all-day Saturday and Sunday. There are some good-value dining offers and a cabaret night every last Thursday of the month.

Salvatore’s of Southport is a warm and friendly neighbourhood restaurant that serves both traditional Italian and British menus. Run by Salvatore himself the restaurant has a loyal following for its great value food. The restaurant is spread over two floors with a cocktail bar upstairs that doubles as a function room. The main restaurant is atmospheric and split into two dining areas with modern décor and there is a small al fresco area at the front. A Table d’Hote menu offers English and Italian staples such as grilled meats, fish & chips, pastas and risottos. The A la Carte menu offers a broader choice of starters and mains from across Europe with plenty of steaks, racks of lamb and a strong fish choice as well as pastas and speciality stone baked pizzas. There is free WiFi for business lunches, special event menus and regular live acts. Sundays see traditional roasts and alternatives served all day. Open Tuesday-Sunday for lunch and dinner.

San Carlo is a small Italian restaurant chain with a huge reputation. Sunday Times food critic AA Gill described it as “the best Italian restaurant outside London” and the chain now has venues in Birmingham, Bristol, Leicester, Manchester, London and – most recently – Liverpool. Located on Castle Street, the Liverpool San Carlo is something of a departure from the regular formula, open and airy with red and black furnishings and a super-stylish lounge and bar area. The emphasis is on classic Italian food cooked fresh to order with fish and seafood a speciality. As well as the main menu there’s a specials board that changes daily and a good wine list that is 95% Italian. San Carlo is open every day from 12 noon until 11pm.

There’s also al fresco dining for up to 25 people. The Crolla family hails originally from the mountain village of Picinisco, high up in the Appenine mountains south of Rome. They moved to Liverpool by way of Scotland and their Bold Street deli-restaurant, The Italian Club, offers a unique take on what the British look for in an Italian restaurant. It can seat around 40 people in a cosy and relaxed environment with lovely beech-wood flooring, wooden furniture and walls decked with Italian scenes amidst a backdrop of shelves packed with Italian deli products and wines. Traditional Italian background music completes the picture. The menu offers a range of authentic Italian dishes which you can eat in or take out and in addition there is a daily-changing selection of Italian salads, hot specials and paninis. The Italian Club has a full license and is open from 10am-7pm, Monday to Saturday and 11am-6pm Sundays. Spring 2009 saw the opening of their specialist Italian fish restaurant, The Italian Club Fish, also on Bold Street.

The Italian Club Fish on Bold Street is a brand new venture for the Crolla family, who also own deli-restaurant The Italian Club, further along Bold Street. It’s one of the few places on Merseyside you can enjoy fresh fish and seafood and the menu ranges from Scottish-style Italian fish & chips to Mediterranean specials, oysters, seafood pasta and calamari. It’s open from noon til 10pm, Tuesday through Sunday, and like its sister venue offers a cosy and relaxed environment with lovely beech-wood flooring, wooden furniture and walls decked with Italian scenes. There is an all-Italian wine list and also a function room that can accommodate private parties.

The Pizza Parlour on Liverpool’s Smithdown Road first opened its doors way back in 1977 and has established itself as one of the city’s most popular takeaway pizzerias. All the pizza dough is made fresh each day on the premises and there is a massive choice of 27 different pizzas, all available in three sizes – regular, large and super. As well as the pizzas, there is a choice of six pasta dishes --lasagne, spaghetti bolognese, gnocchi, tagliatelle pescatore, spaghetti pizzaiola and tagliatelli alfredo. Also, unusually for a takeaway, there is a choice of wines, beers as well as soft drinks to go. Pizza Parlour is open six days a week from 5pm-10pm Tuesday to Thursday and until 10.30pm Friday to Sunday.

Located centrally in Southport on Avondale Road, just off the Promenade and Lord Street. Trattoria O’ Sole Mio is a family run, authentic Italian restaurant that offers much more than pizzas and pastas. Family run by Boris and Olimpia for the last 8 years, O’ Sole Mio or ‘My Sunshine’ has become a local favourite for celebrations and romantic dinners alike. The friendly, spacious and atmospheric restaurant can accommodate up to 120 diners and is very popular for larger parties and private functions. The restaurant is close to the beach, seafront and the theatre so it is very busy in the summer months, when its always a good idea to book. Here you can expect truly authentic Italian dishes made with locally sourced meat, fish and vegetables and cooked to order. Starters on the A la Carte offer the likes of deep fried whitebait, grilled sardines in garlic or sautéed chicken livers with wine and chilli, a small pizza menu covering the classics. Mains offer a range of homemade pasta and risotto, a good choice of grilled or pan fried fresh fish and seafood and there is plenty for the carnivore including daily specials. All the desserts are homemade and change regularly. The Table d’Hote menu comes in at a set price for 3 courses and is available all week till closing and on Fridays and Saturdays until 7.30pm. Tribeca bar and pizzeria is housed in an enormous double fronted old warehouse on Berry Street on the edge of Chinatown. The space has a lower and upper floor with a minstrels gallery accessed by two sets of stairs left and right. The lower floor houses the open Pizza kitchen where you can watch the chefs in action and there is a large bar to the right and to the left a dining area. Going upstairs there is another lounge and dining area, both these areas feature quirky modern antique furniture from the 60’s and 70’s. There is green and brown décor with wooden tables and comfy leather chairs or leather booth seating, in one area it has been set up to look live a living room from the late 60’s complete with an electric bar fire, standard lamp and period art on the walls. Drinks wise there are all the beers, wines and spirits you would expect in a premium style bar. The pizzas are made with Italian dough and are thin based 12" and stone baked. They are all priced at a great value £5 and there is a choice of 20 different types including the Tribeca Classico - the chef's own creation made with a lot of love. From May there are live bands every Thursday with DJs on Fridays and Saturdays. The venue can accommodate up to 350 people, is happy to rent out the upstairs for private parties and is children friendly until 9pm when the music may get a little louder playing Indie Rock and 80’s classic tunes. Zenzero in Formby is a stylish and contemporary Italian restaurant that opened its doors in 2006. Subdued lighting, polished wooden floors and high ceilings set the tone and the menu offers plenty of choice for all the family. There’s a good range of pizzas and pastas – including their house special, Sea bass linguine – and plenty of meat and fish main courses. They also feature Stifato, Sicilian fish stew, on the menu. The wine list is all-Italian with various by-the-glass options including prosecco and champagne. As well as the a la carte, Zenzero also offers set-price menus at lunch and dinner and a special family-style Sunday lunch. And children in high chairs eat free any time.
