It doesn't look great from the outside but don't let that stop you from paying a visit. You will love it. Great food and fantastic people!
I have been to this restaurant for various occasions i.e. Christmas Party, Birthday Party, Girly Night, quiet meal for two and each time the food, service etc was brilliant and I couldn't find fault with anything. This Restaurant gets very busy and yet nothing ever suffers and you never feel rushed. I would definitely recommend it to anyone for any kind of occasion - I love it and if you like something a little different so will you!
Had the most marvellous meal here at the start of April. The food was the best I have ever tasted (we had the Armenian Banquet) and was very reasonably priced to boot, as was the Turkish wine which we enjoyed.
The owner and his Wife were the perfect hosts and could not have done more for us.
The surroundings were comfortable and interesting!
You cannot miss out on this place - try for yourself - we will be going back very soon
Friendly, helpful staff, great food (generous portions), cosy/comfortable atmosphere. The kind of place you can enjoy a great meal and feel relaxed instead of rushed. For those who don't like their food too spicy much of what we had was mildly spiced, but you can choose hotter stuff if you want! It was good to be able to relax and enjoy ourselves instead of feeling rushed out of the door. We will definately going back (this was our first visit). Decor not modern, but not too seventies, it seems fitting for this taverna.
Called in on the spur of the moment, what a find, food well presented and plentiful, staff attentive but not intrusive, we were lucky to get a table as not long after we had sat down the place was full; our first visit but not the last!
This weekend I visited this magnificent restaurant for the fifth time. If going for the first time, I recommend the Armenian Banquet, culminating in sumptuous sticky Armenian delight with pistachios. However - this is a meal for the formidable, and be sure to embark upon it with an eager appetite as you may be surprised as you finish off the first platter of superb mezze - baba ganoush, Armenian sausage, full bi-hummus, freshly made lavash bread to name but a few of the titillating savoury delights you might have on your plate - an equally huge selection of mouthwateringly grilled kebabs is placed before you, with the most perfectly cooked rice, dusted with the sweetness of cinnamon, served with a rich tomato sauce marvellously cut through with coriander seed. It is rapturous eating! They make an Armenian goulash with lamb on the bone, served with couscous, which melts beautifully in the mouth and is somehow sweet and deeply savoury at the time. I love the way this restaurant isn't trying to keep up with the trendy establishments that come and go so quickly, it just is itself, and does that so very well. Another couple of atmosphere plus-points: look left when headed to the toilets and you'll get to peek in the kitchen, and see piles of freshly made lavash bread and the wonders of an Armenian kitchen at work. Plus the music on Saturday night was delightful - I didn't want to leave!
Do not let the modest entrance to this city centre institution fool you. The Armenian Taverna is quite possibly one of the best restaurants that Manchester can boast and the best thing is, that it is truly without any of the pretensions which many of the so called "style" eateries in the city come loaded with.
Unless however you are a regular to Armenian cuisine, do not choose from the menu yourself. Instead allow the owner, Matise, who's larger than life character is barely contained within the four walls of the building to make recommendations for you; his knowledge and passion for the food which this venue creates is magical and well worth reserving a table for alone.
The exquisite menu is complimented further by a wine list of equally unpretentious but well sought out and enjoyed labels, and the Armenian Taverna is also one of very few establishments to stock Château Musar.
There are few restaurants in Manchester that can compete with this restaurant which must be seen to be believed.
Arrived one lunchtime and had the largest portions didn't eat dinner till 9.30 !!!
the owner was well trained and was very freindly
