1. Makana Chenin Blanc, South Africa 2006

South Africa has something of a love affair going on with the Chenin Blanc grape and it’s fair to say that they are now turning out some of the best Chenin Blanc wines in the world. This is a well-rounded, delicious Chenin with limey citrus aromas and well-developed pear flavours, very characteristic of the Chenin grape.

3. San Marco Piemonte Chardonnay, Italy 2006

Italy isn’t exactly known for its Chardonnay production and this part of Piedmont is one of the few locations suitable for growing this popular variety. The result is a dry, fruity wine with a great freshness which works well as an aperitif, with white meats or with salads.

5. Vista Tinta Roriz, Portugal 2004

A smooth, easy drinking wine with a wonderful nose of raisin fruit and flavours of plums and cherries. It’s a blend of two Portuguese grapes -- mainly Tinta Roriz (aka Spain’s famous Tempranillo) and with 15% Touriga Nacional -- producing a well-rounded, medium-bodied wine.

2. Cave de Turckheim Réserve Pinot Blanc, Alsace 2005

Cave de Turckheim has built up a reputation as one of the world’s top cooperatives, producing a range of wines from its HQ near Colmar in the Alsace. This Pinot Blanc is a wonderfully fresh, elegant, dry white wine with lifted acidity, a slightly creamy texture and citrus fruit flavours. A perfect aperitif.

4. False Bay Shiraz, South Africa 2006

With 14.5% alcohol and a rich and spicy flavour profile, this South African Shiraz is not for the faint of heart. It’s made from old vines in Paarl that help produce a rich, concentrated red. Ripe blackcurrant and black cherry flavours with just a hint of oak on the finish.

6. Vega del Rayo Rioja Reserva, Spain 2001

Made by Vinedos Solarena, a family run estate in Haro in Spain’s Rioja Alta. The barrel and bottle aging has produced a soft, smooth wine with a velvety texture. Blackcurrant and bramble fruit flavours with sweet vanilla on the long finish. Perfect with red meat dishes and cheese.
