Box Tree, Ilkley

For fifty years now, the Box Tree at Ilkley has enjoyed a reputation as one of the north's best restaurants. At its peak, it boasted two Michelin stars and in September 2004 -- with the arrival of husband-and-wife team Simon and Rena Gueller -- the good times returned. Simon worked with Marco Pierre White (another ex-Box Tree alumni) in his first job and went on to headline at some of Yorkshire's best restaurants - Dusty Miller's, Guellers, Rascasse. Within four months of taking over at the Box Tree, he had won back a coveted Michelin star.

This traditional and characterful farmhouse dates back to 1720 and Rena, as well as managing the front-of-house, has redesigned the interior in elegant and sympathetic style. There are various rooms spread over the two floors, with an upper dining room and terrace reserved for private parties and special guests. Pre-diinner drinks can be enjoyed in the downstairs bar with an upstairs drawing room reserved for after-meal coffee (and smoking, if desired). Simon's cooking offers a modern take on classical French cooking with dishes presented in impeccable fashion, with an emphasis where possible on local suppliers, farmers and growers. Hospitality is at a premium at the Box Tree, attentive without being too fussy and a fitting complement to dishes such as Seared hand-dived scallops with roast celeriac puree, smoked eel and Braeburn apple and truffle vinaigrette, Fillet of milk-fed veal with wild mushroom ragu, sweet potato soubise and Madeira jus and Blackberry souffle with hot blackberry sauce. The wine selection is suitably expansive and was recently recognised by the AA with a notable wine list award. Tables are available in the snug, fireside and in the main dining room with private dining facilities for groups and parties. The Box Tree also has an event management service Box Tree Events which provides a Michelin-star fine dining experience for all kinds of private dinners, receptions and functions.
