Located on the aptly named China Street in the centre of Lancaster, J Atkinson & Co. have been trading from these premises since 1901 as the area's premier Tea and Coffee merchants. Established since 1837, the business has seen five generations of continuous trading and the shop has amassed a fabulous accumulation of tea and coffee artefacts and an original single roaster dating back to 1945 still roasts daily in the shop window wafting the aroma down the street. As you enter the store, it's like going back in time -- it has all its original shop fittings and looks a bit like an Apothecary with its old containers full of beans. Now owned and run by Ian Steel, an award winning artisan roaster, Atkinsons uses the age-old relationships built up with the plantations across the coffee- and tea-producing world and they expertly handle the skilful process from bean and leaf to cup, producing single estate and blended beverages of exceptional quality. Although they have the retail store with a few tables, anyone anywhere in the UK can enjoy their tea and coffee by ordering online. Atkinsons also have a strong trade arm, supplying other coffee shops and the on-trade with tea, coffee and machines. They can train in all aspects of the product including the art of the Barista. They even run an Academy above the shop which has courses for the keen amateur on tea and coffee, covering all aspects of knowledge from green bean and leaf to tasting skills.
