Eastern Spice in Prudhoe, near Hexham, is a new Indian restaurant that opened in August 2009. The proprietor has 25 years experience working in restaurants right across the UK and in this new venture he has introduced an exciting Indian fusion menu that combines the tried and true curry house classics with innovative dishes like Posh Spice (Chicken or lamb with fresh cream, sugar, egg and mango pulp), Joi Yorkshire (Roast lamb cooked bangle style with light spices and served with Yorkshire pudding), Sylheti Sea Bass (Pan-fired fillet of sea bass served with thai chilli rice and red pepper sauce) and the intriguingly named chef’s speciality Bongho Bondhu. Eastern Spice can seat up to 150 diners and is a great place for parties and functions. It’s open from 5pm to midnight Monday to Saturday and from 3pm until 10pm Sundays when there is an ‘eat as much as you like’ buffet.

Located centrally in Seahouses, The Indian Brasserie is a contemporary high quality Indian restaurant and bar. The double fronted building has been tastefully refurbished with stripped back brick walls, mood lighting and smart leather chairs with clothed and well dressed tables. The 46-cover restaurant offers fine dining from across the subcontinent and the friendly and passionate staff encourage you to try different dishes. Indian Brassiere provides a wide variety of choices such as Bokra Nola, RC21, Nawabi Ghost and Hari Chilli King Prawn Masala. Each and every dish is made fresh from scratch, all painstakingly prepared and long marinated to get a real intensity of flavour. They have a good range of bottled beers and wines plus a takeaway service. Open from 5-11pm every day.

There’s no mistaking who’s in charge at Mrs Ali’s. Her portrait stares down from the walls and up from the menus at this eponymous Jesmond Indian which has a bar at ground level, a first floor dining space and private rooms that can accommodate up to 20 diners. It’s open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday lunch and as well as the main a la carte menu there is a good-value Express Lunch – ‘great value for money, tasty, healthy and faster than a Bengal tiger,’ says Mrs Ali – and Happy Nights on Thursday and Sunday. There is also a takeaway menu -- £1 delivery charge within a three-mile radius and a special banquet menu fior groups.

Located centrally in Gosforth, Shahe (Sha-hee) takes its name from the Indian for ‘Royal’. This contemporary Indian restaurant offers an elevated and special dining experience. The interior is lavishly decked out with a VIP feel, the menus offer fine dining from across the subcontinent and the friendly and passionate staff encourage you to eat like a Maharaja. Enjoy dishes from Kashmir in the North, Madras in the South or indeed from Delhi where the exotic Moghul style offers rich, creamy Lamb dishes, their speciality. Each and every dish is made fresh from fine ingredients and Halal meat. The intimate restaurant has elegant place settings with clothed tables and a choice of booth seating for romantic meals or more private dining. Although they have been established for 28 years they are constantly innovating with new dishes to try, the latest being ‘RC 21’- ask for it! A good range of bottled beers and wines plus takeaway. Open Monday-Saturday 12-2pm and 6-12pm and Sunday 6-12pm.
