Hexham’s Bouchon Bistrot has brought a taste of French country cooking to the northeast. The proprietor hails from the Loire Valley and has worked in Michelin-starred restaurants across France. Classics like French onion soup, Coq au vin and Apple tarte tartin rub shoulders on the menu with starters such as ‘Head to toe’ pork terrine with herb salad and gribiche sauce and mains like Roasted skate wing with beurre noisette and capers. Prices are very reasonable too with starters around the £5-£7 mark, most mains £11-£14 and desserts £4-£6. Bouchon is located in a characterful building on Gilesgate, opposite Hexham swimming pool and it’s open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday. Blackfriars Restaurant lays claim to be the oldest purpose-built restaurant in the UK, dating back to 1239 when it was a refectory for the 'Black Friars'. Situated opposite the entrance to Middlesbrough’s Albert Park, Central Park has been a fixture of the Teeside dining scene for more than 20 years. In the summer of 2008, a major refurbishment was completed, adding a contemporary new look and including an extension into the building next door and the addition of a roof garden with views out over the park. Situated in the Newcastle shopping area of Princess Square near the Library, Gospoda opened in 1997 and remains the only Polish restaurant in the North East. Gospoda translates as restaurant or inn, somewhere warm and friendly to go for comfort food and drink that won't break the bank. Here you will find real Polish home cooking using recipes handed down through the generations and a modern twist or two along the way. They also have a European menu at lunchtimes Monday-Friday perfect for business people to eat within an hour. Expect great polish beers and vodkas, light bites and larger meals all at great prices. Starters come in at around £2-£3, try Polish Slaska sausage fried with onions and served with Polish bread and mustard and mains from £6-£8 such as Hunters Stew or pork and beef schnitzels. There is plenty of choice for vegetarians and they are famous for their stuffed dumplings. Desserts include homemade apple pie and crunchy waffle cake, in fact all the cakes here are homemade. A great space to come for a beer, snack or coffee, the space also lends itself to art exhibitions and is currently showing a range of photographs for a competition called Poland through a lens.

Located in the Metro Centre shopping mall in Gateshead, Rice Flame Bar and Grill is the latest venue from a growing franchise of ultra-modern temples to the ubiquitous grain. First established in Manchester, Rice has been a runaway success story, offering pan-Asian and world-influenced rice dishes for those on the go, shoppers, business people and this healthy style of food is perfect for families.
