Amalfi is THE pre-theatre dining venue in Sunderland, situated in the city’s historic centre right in front of the Empire Theatre. This Italian restaurant has been established 20 years but under the current ownership for the last eight and offers an extensive Italian menu and wine list, a specials board that changes twice a week and special pre-theatre deals. As well as the usual pizza and pasta favourites, Amalfi has a good selection of home-made breads and lots of choice in chicken, fish, beef and fillet main courses. The restaurant seats up to 80 diners and can cater for functions and private parties. Amalfi is open for lunch Wednesday to Saturday and dinner Monday to Saturday.

Situated just off Newcastle Quayside behind the Law Courts, Italian-inspired Caffe Vivo is the latest opening for Terry Laybourne. It’s housed in a 17th century warehouse and with its brick walls, iron pillars, sparkly aluminium chairs and smooth leather banquettes it’s a lively, fun and no-frills eaterie. Café by day and simple supper place at night, you can drop by for a cappuccino and fresh focaccia, a lunchtime bowl of pasta or mozzarella salad, an after-work glass of wine and plate of formaggi or a relaxed supper which might start with Zucchini flower fritters with 5 italian cheeses followed by Tuscan braised venison with mascarpone/parmesan polenta, wild mushrooms and red wine then Panna cotta with raspberries and grappa. Situated within the Live Theatre, Caffè Vivo is the ideal location for a pre-theatre meal and also has private dining facilities. It’s open for lunch and dinner, Tuesday to Saturday.

Located next to the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge and a stone’s throw away from the uber-trendy Baltic Art Gallery, Gusto is yet another reason to lure you into Newcastle’s Quayside. Expect friendly service with a menu focused on freshly prepared classic and contemporary Italian dishes including an excellent range of pizza, pasta, seafood and meats. Choose from a la carte, lunch, childrens and set menus as well as vegetarian options. The bustling bar features a huge list of cocktails and groups are welcome – ask for the large ‘Con Amici’ table. Gusto is open right through from noon until midnight Monday to Wednesday and 1am Thursday to Sunday. There is live music on Sunday evenings.

Peppy’s in Heaton is an Italian ristorante and pizzeria with bags of character. Family run and family oriented, proprietors Vincenzo and Barbara have a created a real Aladdin’s cave of a venue which is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday serving a traditional Italian menu and also for Sunday lunch when they do a roast of the day. As well as the main a la carte menu, good-value set menus are available lunchtime and early evening. Peppy’s – which is named after a cartoon mouse – also has a room upstairs for functions and private dining which can accommodate up to 25 diners.
