Sangster’s sits on the main street of Elie, a Fife village on the northern shore of the Firth of Forth that’s convenient for both St Andrews and Edinburgh. Long a popular destination for tourists in search of fresh air and tranquillity, it’s recently been this Michelin-starred restaurant which has been drawing in the crowds. Established in 2003 by chef Bruce and wife Jackie, who handles front-of-house, Sangster’s received its star in 2009, the latest in a string of awards and accolades that Bruce has picked up over the years. The restaurant itself is a simple affair with a small lounge area and a handful of tables in the main dining room; it seats just 28. The four-course dinner menu (priced at £39.50) offers a choice of three starters, an intermediate course, three mains and two desserts or a cheese plate. A typical starter might be the Seared scallop and langoustine served with warm mange tout and carrot salad, raspberry vinegar dressing and pine kernels whilst for the main course the Saddle of venison comes with Scottish girolles, gratin potato, red cabbage compote and red wine sauce. The wine selection is carefully sourced and the list carefully annotated and reasonably priced. Opening hours at lunch and dinner vary with the season but it’s always best to book in advance.
