Clean, comfortable
Old Schoolhouse Hotel and Restaurant – Port IsaacMy friend and I recently had lunch at the Blue Tomato in Port Isaac and were totally disappointed with it. To start with the tonic in our G&Ts was flat, then we had to put up with three children screaming and running through the restaurant while we were trying to talk and enjoy our meals. They even knocked over one of the chairs at our table. The waitress seemed to be oblivious to this disturbance and that how that would deter prospective customers who were perusing restaurants for lunch at that time. Indeed we will never frequent this restaurant again either. In addition to that the food was overpriced and our G&Ts cost £4.50 for a flat G&T each.
The Edge – Port IsaacI love this restaurant, I visit Rock in Cornwall 3 or 4 times a year and eat out a lot, I discovered the Harbour tucked away in Port Isaac last year and it's become my favourite place to eat. The owner is also the chef and that speaks volumes to me. The first thing I love is the location, Port Isaac is a beautiful village set around a steep sided natural harbour, the Restaurant is a pretty little olde worlde wonky building right on the Harbour front looking out to sea. Inside, the decor is lovely and fresh - feels very homely with scatter cushions, lovely wooden tables and nice pictures on the walls. The food is really excellent, great ingredients, tasty recipes and lovely presentation. Nice house wine at a decent price too. Over all, it's a bit more expensive than a pub supper but you absolutely get what you pay for. Watch out for the tide if you park on the beach, also, I'd recommend booking as there are only a few tables and it's been fully booked whenever I have been. The table service has usually been excellent, always friendly but varies on different nights. Also, if you don't like fish, there's only usually a couple of non fish dishes on the menu so might be worth checking! The fillet steaks are fabulous.
The Slipway – Port IsaacMy first visit to Cornwall, and likewise to the delightful Harbour Restaurant, friendly welcome, nicely unpretentious, comfortable with a charming atmosphere. delicious scallops, and a first class pan fried Sea Bream, so good on my return home I tried to recreate the recipe, good but not as good. Good wines, good service and very reasonable prices. One of our party, when we lunched the following day at a very famous restaurant in Padstow, declared the meal at The Harbour was better!!!!!
The Slipway – Port IsaacMy first of hopefully many visits to the Harbour Restaurant was a delightful experience. The ambience is warm and welcoming with a very friendly atmosphere, all the dinners seem connected in the experience and yet there is still privacy. The meal was excellent with delicious flavoursome fish, beautifully presented and with a wine list to compliment the food. Altogether a must visit restaurant.
The Slipway – Port IsaacHaving not been to this part of cornwall before i was eager to sample some of the beautiful fresh fish and seafood on offer. I was so impressed by this family run bistro in the heart of this quaint seaside town. There is a lovely warm finish to the decor of the traditional oak beamed restaurant area and it has bags of character, which only add to the dining experience. For starter i ate mussels which was recommended by friends who visit regularly. They were bursting with flavour. My main course of sea bass was cooked to perfection and nothing like some of the bland fish dishes i have tried elsewhere on my travels. My only regret about my visit to The Harbour Restaurant was that i only had time to eat there once but rest assured i will be back.
The Slipway – Port IsaacThis is a brilliant restaurant. This very old building has a perfect position right on the harbour and the restoration has been simply, but tastefully done. The menu - a lot of the ingredients being of Cornish origin - is fabulous. Traditional dishes are beautifully cooked and very reasonably priced. There is an excellent wine list. All this is topped off by efficient and charming waitress service. For a relaxed evening with delicious food, you could not do better.
The Slipway – Port IsaacDelicious bistro style fresh fish and seafood served in this cosy yet chic restaurant in the heart of Port Isaac. Excellent service and a fine wine list. A most enjoyable evening!
The Slipway – Port IsaacChef/fisherman couple aim to put a new Port Isaac restaurant on the map! We had lunch at The Harbour Restaurant today (Sun 23 March 08) and were totally blown away by the quality of the food on offer here! At last, Cornwall has a new outstandingly good restaurant that you should definitely put on your shortlist. The Harbour Restaurant is located in a unique 15th century building on the edge of the water at Port Isaac and provides a place where people can have some really good food and wine, for under £30 a head. It has the feel of a wonderful French bistro, with a friendly, cosy, seaside atmosphere and informal feel. I have just found further information about this restaurant that may be of interest to you: The Harbour is run by chef Emily Brown. After training at a top London cookery school, Emily worked for three years in the restaurant industry in Burgundy. Her time there brings French and continental influences to the dishes she creates, which use the best Cornish ingredients available. Emily’s cooking is characterised by a fresh, seasonal menu based on excellent local produce, matched with a wine list featuring great vintages from smaller vineyards at very affordable prices. There are choices for everyone, including vegetarians, and everything is freshly cooked from scratch, from the homemade cakes and pastries to the dressings and sauces. With ingredients sourced from trusted local producers, almost everything she uses has been grown, caught or reared in Cornwall. Seafood is landed, literally, on the doorstep. Cornish cheeses, the best of the season’s vegetables, and meat from nearby farms are all transformed into a contemporary menu with French, British and Italian influences. We will definitely be returning!
The Slipway – Port IsaacWe visited The Harbour Restaurant for the first time today (Easter Sunday 2008) and were extremely impressed. The food was of a very high standard and you could tell that it was all made from scratch, particularly the home-made fishcakes. The raspberry meringue roulade was to die for! The restaurant, which overlooks the harbour, has a cosy bistro-style feel to it and has been very tastefully refurbished. The service was also excellent. We'll definitely be going there again on our next trip to Port Isaac!
The Slipway – Port IsaacWe had our wedding reception at the edge in May 2007. Everyone will say that there wedding was perfect but ours really was! That is very much thanks to Penny (the manager) Ben (the Chef) and the rest of the team. We booked the restaurant on the basis of the reviews we had seen on the internet. We are not locals and so it was very much hit and miss how it would go. 23 very happy and contented wedding guests left the edge after our reception. There wasn't a mumble or grumble to be heard. the food and service were excellent. If the staff know that you are celebrating they will really pull out the stops. A special place for our special day - we will certainly be back
The Edge – Port Isaacwe have just returned from our holiday to Port Issac and on our first night the Old School House was recommended to us by one of the local B&B owners. The owners and staff were welcoming and the atmosphere was very relaxed but professional. The meal was fantastic we would certainly recommend the scallops !! Exceptional. In comparison we ate at Rick Steins Cafe a few days later and in all honesty the food served at the School Restaurant was of a much better standard for taste, presentation and value - we will definitely be eating there again - Excellent Restaurant.
Old Schoolhouse Hotel and Restaurant – Port Isaacwe visited the old schoolhouse for my others birthday. the menu was mainly local seafood and was extremely good, but there was a small selection of local meats such as cornish lamb which one of our guests had. the restaurant is small but very well organised the bar and waiting staff were extremely attentive and helpful, we ate our frst course on their lovely patio, and found the whole experience very relaxing and the food superb. this restaurant is not cheap but definitely worth the cost.... Go and try it.
Old Schoolhouse Hotel and Restaurant – Port IsaacI went on a girl's night out and had a fabulous time. The staff were really brilliant, attentive, knowledgeable about the food and friendly. Every single thing was delicious from the home made bread, steak, veggie and fish mains to the 'to die for' puddings. I can't wait to go again - what a great restaurant.
The Edge – Port IsaacExcellent, I don't really want to tell anyone about this utter gem! Again, last night was the best food I have ever eaten in Cornwall bar none, ambience perfect and the upstairs seating is so cosy. Menu variety quite fishy. This is cooking at the very best and can't wait to go back. Scallops and mussels were better than many overrated 5* London hotels. PS: Don't tell anyone because this is still unspoilt/not-mass-produced!
Slipway Hotel and Restaurant – Port Isaac8 of us went to celebrate a birthday, the restaurant were very good they decorated our table and did a couple of other touches, we had a superb meal, every one enjoyed it, all the dishes ordered were excellent, the wine list was good and the staff v nice indeed. We live in St Ives so its difficult for us to eat here without having to stay somewhere overnight. If this was nearer to us we would be regulars. Please if you are anywhere near Port Isaac get in here and have a meal you will not regret it.
The Edge – Port IsaacMy wife and I had lunch on one day and dinner the following day. On both occasions the food was absolutely superb, cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The panoramic views added to the wonderful atmosphere. The best we have found in North Cornwall without a doubt. Pat & Derek Ewell, Dorset.
The Edge – Port IsaacLovely find, set above the cliffs in this pretty fishing village. A very welcome, new style bar and restaurant, that has a very attractive menu. I had the home made battered haddock with good chips and tartare sauce, a large glass of white wine, both were excellent. The atmosphere was warming and relaxed as everyone gazed out of the windows at the view.
