Located in the village of Braughing, between Ware and Buntingford, The Golden Fleece has been resurrected after being closed for 10 years. Jess and Peter Tatlow, the new owners, successfully ran the George & Dragon at Watton-at-Stone for nine years and have brought some of the team with them aiming to recreate the quality of food, drink and service in Braughing. The building dates back to the 17th century so, as you would expect, there are oak beams, exposed brickwork and open fireplaces. There is a large terraced al fresco area overlooking the garden at the rear, perfect for warmer months. The bar area has seen a renovation with a brand-new wooden bar and stripped floors offering regularly changing real ales and an eclectic wine list. You can also eat here casually without booking. The main dining room is bright with contemporary furnishings and décor with room for 30 diners; a second room accommodates up to 12 for an intimate family meal or celebration. The food here is all prepared in house, using fresh produce, wherever possible sourced from local suppliers. Expect modern European and traditional pub classics on the seasonal menu with plenty of non meat choices and provision for Coeliacs throughout the menu. Most of the starters are also available as mains, try the Golden Fleece Smokey– flaked smoked haddock topped with tomato concasse and gratinated or a salad of marinated pheasant breast with balsamic-soaked pears topped with crispy pancetta. Mains offer locally shot game, fresh fish and exotic curries and tagines. Properly reared and hung steaks are served with hand cut chips and a choice of sauce, homemade burgers and the Millionaires Bun -- fillet steak in a bread roll with hand cut chunky chips, homemade coleslaw and mixed salad leaves. Desserts change daily and are listed on a board. Recommended in the 2013 Michelin Guide.
