About Gilroy’s Restaurant at The Morritt

The Morritt Arms Hotel sits in the Teesdale countryside at Greta Bridge, near Barnard Castle, and has a rich history stretching back to the seventeenth century. Today a four-star country house hotel, spa retreat and popular wedding venue, it was visited by Dickens, Turner and Sir Walter Scott and in the middle of last century famous artist John Gilroy created much of the artwork that adorns the walls of the casual dining Dickens Bar and Bistro. Gilroy’s Restaurant is the two-AA-rosette fine dining restaurant in the main house where young and passionate Head Chef Ory Vanes serves classic English dishes with a modern twist. The menu changes regularly and is based around fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Gilroy’s is open for lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.

We came for afternoon tea on Sunday for my mother’s 90th birthday and I have to say the service was brilliant, thank you. However, I must be honest and say that I was disappointed with the food, it was nothing like the wonderful sample menu that’s on your website or the photographs other people had posted on line. The ham, tuna and egg sandwiches were very basic, the fruit scone, brownie and coffee cake weren’t very nice at all to be honest, and we weren’t sure what the other two things were or even if they were sweet or savoury which was a bit disconcerting. Overall, the standard was pretty poor in comparison to other places near by. I appreciate that there was a wedding on the same day but that shouldn’t have affected the quality of our food. I think there’s a huge discrepancy between the sample menu, photographs, and what you actually serve and this needs to be rectified so that customers can have realistic expectations.

The service was fantastic and we loved the old building and grounds but for the price the food was average . Soufflé was stodgy , no fresh vegetables with the lamb . It all tasted like it had been warmed up . In fairness there was a wedding on and it’s the bank holiday so given location and excellent service I wouldn’t rule out giving it another go on a quieter night

Amazing and relaxing day at spa including lunch. The staff are very friendly especially lady in restaurant. The spa facility was great too. Very relaxing moments with glass of Prosecco. Thank you for amazing time, we would definitely recommend this place to friends.

Four of us had dinner on two consecutive evenings which we found most enjoyable in every respect. The service was friendly, positive and efficient: the menu offered a good choice of varied food styles and all courses were well prepared and presented. Truly in the best tradition of a coaching inn as it historically was.

Lunch at 14.00hrs on Saturday , 20th May, 2023, was very accommodating and provided three perfect Fillet Steaks for three hungry visitors. The perfect Service was provided by all of the Staff that we met and Rhiann was a cheerful and chatty Waitress.

Overnight Spa break at Morritt Hall for my sister in law's 70th birthday. Just the two of us having a quiet celebration. The whole stay was a great success. The friendliness and efficiency of the staff was excellent. Our meals were well-cooked generous portions. We would definitely consider staying again.
