1539 Restaurant & Bar at Chester Racecourse gives you the opportunity to enjoy contemporary British cooking in breathtaking modern surroundings. The glass-fronted venue is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and boasts wonderful views out over the racecourse, in particular from a decked area which is perfect for al fresco dining during the summer months. The menus utilise the best local produce from the surrounding region including Vale of Clwyd beef, Goosnargh chicken and duck, morning-fresh vegetables from Cheshire farms and herbs from the 1539 herb garden. Venture up the spiral staircase and you will find a luxurious lounge area with a private bar -- Ruinart at The Roof. This facility is great for pre-dinner drinks or a light bite from the lunch menu and can be hired for private functions and special events.

Barlounge is a lively cocktail bar and restaurant located in Chester city centre. Open daily from 12noon until late, you can drink, dine and socialise in informal surroundings. Relax on a comfy sofa in the bar area, catch up with friends on the sun terrace (heated and covered in winter) or eat in the restaurant where the menu offers something to suit everyone, including vegetarian options. Private hire is available for weddings and corporate functions. Barlounge picked up the Best Bar award at the 2008 Northern Hospitality awards.

Chester's riverside Blue Moon Café is a real institution, attracting an eclectic clientele ranging from kids right through to pensioners. Apart from the great location, one of the main draws is the interior décor. It's a real 1950s throwback, an American diner filled with memorabilia, including a fab Rocola Bubbler jukebox filled with tunes from the 1950s and 1960s and TV monitors showing original shows from that era including Ready Steady Go. New owners took over in 2007, and having run an award-winning gastropub in Derbyshire they have stepped the food up a gear with the Blue Moon now offering restaurant-quality dining. The menu varies throughout the year ranging from traditional British classics to Med, Middle Eastern, Asian and Tex-Mex dishes. The Blue Moon Café is open every day from 10 am (9am on weekends) til 5pm or 5.30pm. It's also fully licensed, so apart from the great coffee you can choose from a range of wines and bottled beers.

Originally a farmhouse, Carriages was converted into a real ale pub, restaurant, campsite and B&B in 2001. It's set in a tranquil countryside location in Tattenhall, near Peckforton and Beeston castles. The 50-cover restaurant is light and airy with a farmhouse feel and is open every day for lunch and dinner serving traditional British food.like Beer-battered fish & homemade chips and their popular Pavlova. Private parties are catered for in the restaurant for up to 50 people or buffet style for up to 100. A marquee is also available for larger functions and weddings. If you wish to stay over, there are six ensuite rooms (two of them family rooms) all with wifi internet access and prices start from £40 for a single and £60 for a double. The campsite is for caravan/camping club members with pitches with electric hook-up from £15 per night, booking essential.

Established in 2000, Donato's & Sandro's is one of Chester's most popular Italian restaurants. Open seven nights a week, the place always has a real buzz and booking is advisable at weekends. It's housed in a characterful old building that was formerly a railway station and cocoa house and the décor is trattoria-style Italian with wooden tables and chairs. Everything is sourced locally and freshly prepared on the premises, including their own dough and bread. Specials boards are sprinkled liberally around the restaurant with fish and seafood a speciality.

Fiesta Havana brings a piece of Cuba to Chester city centre. It's located right on Watergate Street in former wine cellars and with its bare brick walls and trendy lighting it's a popular choice with the twenty- and thirty-something crowd. Open from noon every day until 1am or 2am, it's the place to go for late night eating and drinking with the full menu served until 11pm and tapas available right though to closing time. Popular menu choices include sizzling fajitas and paella and to accompany the food there's a great choice of mocktails, cocktails, shooters, beers, wines and - of course - mojitos. The staff are friendly and well-trained and it's Happy Hour on drinks between 5pm and 8pm, Sunday to Friday.

Francs Bistro in Chester is the city's oldest independent restaurant. It's been serving classic French food to both local residents and visitors since 1987 but has been under new management for the last two years. Francs is set over three floors in a characterful 17th century building and offers fresh, locally sourced food at very affordable prices, especially if you go for one of the special lunchtime or early evening menus. Expect classics like Confit de canard, Steak frites, Coquille St Jacques and Moules marinieres complemented by a great-value wine list. Francs is a good place for parties and functions too catering for up to 12 guests on the top floor, 30 on the middle floor and 40 in the main restaurant.

La Fattoria opened on Chester's Lower Bridge Street in 2007 on the site of what was another Italian restaurant, Vito's. It's a friendly and atmospheric venue with a rustic Italian theme running throughout the interior design. Expect lots of wood, exposed brickwork, authentic Italian produce and even a Vespa scooter. All the food is freshly prepared and large portions are the order of the day. Much of the food is sourced locally with the pasta made in-house and the pizza dough hand-rolled daily. There's also an all-Italian wine list and kids can get half portions from the main menu. La Fattoria is open seven days a week from 10am until midnight.

Set in a baroque mansion house dating back to the seventeenth century, Oddfellows is a beautifully designed 'open house' members' club that opened in Chester in April 2008. Under the one roof you can enjoy cocktails at the lively bar, dine in the stylish contemporary AA-rosetted brasserie, indulge in mouthwatering Modern British cuisine in the elegant restaurant, be tempted by cakes or afternoon tea in the salon, or chill in the enchanting rooftop garden under Bedouin-inspired tents. Later on, you can join the throng at the late bar and dance the night away and up in the eaves are four sumptuous suites which make the perfect crash pad. Oddfellows is open to all but offers a select membership scheme with a range of VIP privileges as well as a full event-management service. Ristorante Sergio in Chester is a well-established family-run pizzeria and trattoria close by the cathedral. Owner Sergio Poletti hails from Tuscany and has been welcoming guests here for some 30 years now in what was Chester's first Italian restaurant. It's very much an old-school Italian experience with traditional décor, an open kitchen and an extensive menu covering all the pizza and pasta favourites along with a good selection of classic mains. Children and groups are made very welcome.

Housed in a large corner building, Sher Khan opened in Chester in November 2008. It's a light and spacious venue which can accommodate 135 diners over two floors and it's one of the few Indian restaurants in Cheshire with an open kitchen. The interior is immaculate with fresh flowers, white linen and a contemporary feel. The menu in this family run venue offers everything you would expect with everything prepared fresh to order and all the spices used are ground in-house. They also do a range of Indian kulfi ice cream. Sher Khan is fully airconditioned and there is free parking in the car park opposite from 3pm onwards.

The Michelin-starred restaurant at Chester's luxurious five-star Grosvenor Hotel & Spa was formerly known as Arkle - after the Duchess of Westminster's famous steeplechaser - but was renamed Simon Radley At The Chester Grosvenor in 2008 in honour of the Executive Chef who has headed up the kitchen team for 20 years and held a Michelin star since 1990. This is fine dining in grand style with a seasonally changing menu inspired by French haute cuisine. Choose from the a la carte or the tasting menu complemented by a thousand-bin wine list which is one of the very best in the country. Stuart's Table at the Farmer's Arms in Huxley is a Cheshire country pub that dates back to the 16th century and legend has it that it served as a field hospital during the Civil War. These days it's very much a foodie haven with a larger-than-life landlord - Stuart Turner - who has an absolute passion for food. Along with head chef Aaron Totty, they have put together a seasonal British menu with steaks a speciality. There are various menus on offer including the a la carte, a light bites lunch menu and a good-value set menu for lunch and early dinner. The pub has various places to eat including the main restaurant area (which seats 40), the snug (10) and a private dining room (14). Stuart's Table is open for dinner every night and lunch Tuesday to Sunday. There is a fine dining evening on the last Friday of every month (£59 for five courses plus accompanying wines) and a regular newsletter for customers. They have also recently launched an online wine shop.

The recently refurbished Watergate Grill is located on the upper rows of Watergate Street Chester. This modern, buzzy Anglo-American restaurant affords the combination of a NYC Steakhouse, a touch of southern hospitality Texas style and the best of British values when it comes to sourcing and quality of produce. Darren and his team ensure that everything is made to order here without taking shortcuts, the Welsh beef is sourced direct from the farm and hung for 28 days for maximum flavour, even the burgers are made using grass fed, fully traceable beef. Ribs are a signature here and slow roasted to their own recipe and they make their own Chilli, meat balls in tomato sauce and Mexican curry. All the favourite are here; Sizzling Fajitas, Burritos, Nachos, Skins and Shakes. At the weekend they open for lazy breakfasts with bottomless drinks, pancakes, bagels, waffles and muffins. Kids can choose from seperate set menus. Open Mon-Fri 12-3/5-10pm, Sat 10-10pm and Sun 10-9pm.

Tropeiro on Grosvenor Street in Chester is a traditional south Brazilian churrascaria with a real gaucho feel. It's a meat eater's heaven with a variety of beef, lamb, pork and chicken cuts cooked on rotating spits over an authentic open charcoal grill. The accompanying hot and cold buffet includes sides like rice, pasta, black bean stew and a choice of 15 gourmet salads. And Tropeiro is one place where you'll never go hungry as you get to eat as much as you want for the one set price. A system of green and red discs on the table tells your waiter whether to keep the meat coming or not. The wine list offers plenty of South American wines and there are plans to introduce some Brazilian wines in the near future. Tropeiro is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner with seating for 150 diners spread over two floors.

Upstairs at the Grill is a split-level Manhattan style steak house and intimate cocktail bar located in Chester city centre. It's open daily from 5pm until bedtime and from 12pm on Sundays and although you will find vegetarian options on offer, the main event here is undoubtedly the selection of steaks, all five week dry-aged Welsh Black beef. Choose from Rib Eye (on and off the bone), Sirloin, Fillet (on and off the bone), Rump, Porterhouse and Chateaubriand and match your choice with a selection from the extensive wine list, which caters to all tastes, including vintage champagnes and classed-growth Bordeaux. A small private dining room is available for small celebrations or business meetings and the whole restaurant is available for hire for weddings and corporate functions.
