Balti House in Rishton High Street started out as a takeaway but recently expanded into next door and now boasts this new restaurant too. You won’t miss it as the striking halogen lighting outside regularly changes colour. The owners have been in the hospitality business for 25 years and the service here is both friendly and efficient with a menu that covers all the classics from the subcontinent. They take great pride in the fact that you can really taste the herbs and spices the kitchen uses. Balti House is unlicensed so you can bring your own booze – or get it from the off licence two blocks away -- and they will provide glasses and corkage free. The takeaway next door also has pizzas, kebabs and burgers to take out.

Bombay Balti has been a feature of the Lancaster dining scene since 2000. It's housed in a listed building on China Street and on entering there is a bar area with comfortable leather settees by an elaborate water feature. The restaurant can seat up to 70 diners and has been refurbished in a contemporary style. All the kitchen staff are trained by the chef patron and the chefs create all the dishes to the ‘house style’ using a unique blend of spices. The Chicken Tikka Karella and the steak chilli fry are very popular. On Sundays, they have a buffet from 2pm-6pm and takeaway is available with local orders over £7 delivered free. Open for lunch Tuesday-Saturday 12pm-2pm, dinner Sunday-Thursday 5.30pm-11.30pm and Friday and Saturday 5.30pm-12.30am.

Established in 1986, Buraq Indian restaurant and takeaway at Bryn, near Ashton-in-Makerfield, has built up a fantastic reputation over the years for its friendly staff and good-quality, reasonably priced food. If you don’t like your chef's recommended curry, they will happily change it for you – and if you still don’t enjoy your food they offer a money-back guarantee. Not many restaurants have this kind of ethos but it’s all part and parcel of really looking after the customer. Owner Mr Taleb is well known in the local community with the warm and welcoming atmosphere largely down to him. If you order takeaway you always get something free thrown in and that’s often the case too in the main restaurant. Buraq is open seven days a week from 5pm to 11.30pm.

Emni Restaurant and Winebar at Norden is a new opening for the team behind the award-winning Emni Indian restaurant in London. The attention to detail that’s a trademark of the London operation has been transplanted to the Pennines with a kitchen team boasting a real wealth of experience. Executive Chef Uttam has cooked for three Indian prime ministers, Chef Kalim was a personal chef to the Sultan of Brunei and Chef Tappan spent eight years with Atul Kochhar at the world-famous Benares restaurant in London. As you would expect, all spices are freshly ground on the premises and all sauces individually prepared. As well as the main menu, there is a bar menu offering finger foods and sizzlers available in the bar area where you are welcome to just drop in for a few drinks. Emni also offers a free taxi drop-off in the surrounding area subject to a minimum spend.

Fusion Spice in Horwich that offers something unique to the area – Indian, Chinese and Thai fusion cooking. It’s spread over two floors with room for 50 diners plus a private dining room that can seat 10 and has its own TV. Fusion Spice’s Indian head chef has worked in hotels around the world for chains like Le Meridien, Holiday Inn and Taj Hotels and the menu includes dishes like Patiala Murg (minced chicken cooked with a distinct curry sauce, diced onion and capsicum) and Chandi Chicken (chunks of chicken soaked in a creamy yoghurt and cheddar marinade, bound with egg, flavoured with cardamom and gilded in the tandoor). The main menu changes twice a year and there are also banquet menus and a weekend specials board. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday and from 12 noon to 11pm on Sundays. Fusion Spice also does event catering for up to 300 people.

Hilal Balti House in Formby is housed in an old schoolhouse, the first in the town, dating back to the 19th century. It retains much of the olde worlde atmosphere with beamed ceilings throughout and an open fire. The menu covers all the Indian favourites and as well as the a la carte there are set meals available for one, two and four people. Chef Special Dishes include Sylheti Ayir, chunks of Bangladeshi Ayir fish cooked in a rich sauce and Malibu Chicken, succulent chicken tikka breast cooked in a thick and creamy coconut sauce with almonds, coconut milk and Malibu liqueur. Hilal has a good selection of wines too as well as Cobra and Kingfisher beer. Function and private parties are welcome and and a takeaway service is available. Hilal is open from 5.30pm every day, until 11pm during the week and midnight at weekends.

Nabis has been established in the St Helens area for nearly 30 years but it was only in May 2006 that they opened this restaurant on the East Lancs Road. It's one of the most opulent Eastern and Indian restaurant for miles around with plush furnishings, a split-level dining area, open kitchen and plasma screen. The menu changes regularly and you can expect a choice of imaginative Eastern and Indian dishes, including lobster. Shantii is a slick and modern 60-cover Indian restaurant in Formby that’s been open for five years, although owner Ali has been in the Formby area for nearly 20. It's fully air-conditioned, has full disabled access and is open seven nights a week and until midnight at weekends. The menu offers all the traditional Indian favourites plus some specialities like duck, monkfish, salmon and red snapper. Part of the menu now has a ‘healthy options’ section with various curries on a points system. There is a Sunday buffet and various special offers for early in the week. They also offer a range of authentic Indian wines. Shantii won both Customer Excellence and Ethical Good Food awards in 2009.

Spice Lounge is Rishton enjoys a commanding position at the top of the moors where four roads intersect. Formerly a country pub, this extremely spacious and well-appointed Indian restaurant has been open since 2006. The restaurant seats 180 and there is also a lounge seating area complete with red leather Chesterfields and shiny wooden floors which can accommodate up to 70 people. In the dining area, there is a canopy that’s reminiscent of a maharajah’s tent which is a great place to eat. Spice Lounge specializes in Bengali cuisine with a selection of English dishes for the less adventurous. The Chicken Lounge and the Lounge Fusion are both popular dishes as well as the Bengali fish. Unlike many Indian restaurants, the menu is always changing and they have set meal options for two or four people. Spice Lounge has theme nights, two big car parks and a private dining area for up to 70 people. It’s a great location to spend the whole night and is open from 4.30pm-11pm Monday to Friday and from 12 noon until 11pm on weekends.

Sukhi’s Indian Restaurant is on Darwen’s main drag, close to the Shell garage. Sukhi literally translates as ‘be happy’ but is also the given name of the restaurant owner. Sukhi’s opened its doors in 2000 and is divided into two separate areas – a takeaway and the main restaurant. It’s a spacious venue with room for up to 100 diners. There’s booth seating available and everything is very spick and span. The restaurant is actually Indian-owned – not Bangladeshi – and this is reflected in the menu with dishes like their Sukhi Special. The premises are licensed and they used to have their own beer here before the credit crunch took its toll. The takeaway offers the same menu as the restaurant – with cheaper prices – and has a delivery service available. There is free wifi internet access too and Sukhi’s is open for dinner seven nights a week and right through from 12 noon at weekends.
