A fixture on Didsbury’s Burton Road since 1987, Great Kathmandu is one of the oldest Nepalese restaurants in the Manchester area. Right on the corner of Lapwing Lane and Burton Road, the 80-cover restaurant has recently been refurbished and has large bay windows looking out onto the street. Head Chef Chandra Kumar KC along with Chef Dhurba Dangol cooks authentic Nepali dishes that have been passed down through the generations and all pastes, spices, paneer and yoghurt are produced in-house by Chandra himself. Specialities include the Chandane Dry Fry, succulent pieces of chicken or lamb cooked with herbs and spices in traditional Nepalese style and the fiery Chicken Khorsani, cooked with fresh green chillies, ginger and spices and one not for the faint of heart. Their Murgi Masala (for two) requires 24 hours notice and is a whole chicken marinated in a special sauce, cooked with spices and served with biryani. All the Indian classics are also available on the menu and most of the fish and meat dishes can be cooked as vegetarian dishes. Great Kathmandu is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner and has been picked by the Observer as one of the best Indian restaurants in the UK and features in the Hardens guide.

Northenden’s Jai Kathmandu is one of Manchester’s oldest Nepalese restaurants. It’s been in its current location for 21 years and before that the family owned the Kathmandu in Manchester city centre. There’s even a royal connection here as the founder of this family-run restaurant was at one time chef for the King of Nepal. Recently refurbished, Jai Kathmandu now has a new upstairs dining area and can accommodate 150 diners over the two floors. It’s open for lunch and dinner seven days a week serving a range of Nepalese and Indian dishes. The breads, spices, pastes, yoghurts and paneer cheese are all prepared fresh in-house and specialities include starters like Chicken chilli and Momocha (steamed lamb dumplings with spicy sauce) and mains such as Fish Massala and Khari Ghost There are plenty of vegetarian options and a substantial wine selection with a choice of 60-odd bins. Regular customers include the makers of a very prominent brand of Indian foodstuffs, something which speaks volumes about the quality of food you can expect at Jai Kathmandu.
