Al Basha Restaurant at Newcastle’s Bigg Market is a Lebanese restaurant and takeaway that’s open seven days a week from noon right through until 1.30am. It’s been established four years now but moved into larger premises on the same street a year ago and can now seat up to 90 diners in a dining space decorated with Egyptian, Lebanese and Islamic artefacts. The experienced kitchen team has worked in hotels in Syria and Dubai and they use their own unique spice mixes to create a distinctive flavour for the food. Popular dishes include starters like hummus, tabouleh and stuffed vine leaves and mains such as the mixed grill and chicken shawarma. Alongside the main menu they also regularly run an open buffet and customers are welcome to share a selection of dishes tapas-style.

There’s no mistaking who’s in charge at Mrs Ali’s. Her portrait stares down from the walls and up from the menus at this eponymous Jesmond Indian which has a bar at ground level, a first floor dining space and private rooms that can accommodate up to 20 diners. It’s open for lunch and dinner every day except Sunday lunch and as well as the main a la carte menu there is a good-value Express Lunch – ‘great value for money, tasty, healthy and faster than a Bengal tiger,’ says Mrs Ali – and Happy Nights on Thursday and Sunday. There is also a takeaway menu -- £1 delivery charge within a three-mile radius and a special banquet menu fior groups.
