The Rivals, Manchester – Dining At The Royal Exchange Theatre

Once upon a time Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre was the world’s biggest cotton exchange. In 1976, it became a theatre and the very first production was Sheridan’s comedy of manners, The Rivals. And now four decades on, the play has given its name to the Royal Exchange’s new restaurant, bar and café which have been fully redeveloped to embrace the dramatic location, including an indoor beer garden to make the most of the stunning architecture of the Great Hall.

The Rivals is a collaboration between Rupert Hill and Goska Langrish, both established names in Manchester’s food and drink scene. Rupert is both a recognised stage and screen actor and co-owner of the successful venues The Castle Hotel, Gulliver's, The Eagle Inn, Baker’s Vaults and part of the team who launched The Parlour – winner of the coveted Observer Food Monthly Best Sunday Lunch Award. Goska has a long-established career in hospitality, both here and in London and was instrumental in the success of The Parlour.

“I’m so excited about this new venture, a place where both my passions come together in one stunning venue,” says Rupert. “We will be bringing not just a great new food and drink offer (including a wide range of cask ales and craft beers), but also a commitment to all the arts in our own events programming and promotion.” The Rivals Café opens from 9.30am serving teas, coffees, homemade cakes, pastries, sandwiches, salads and hot food alongside a full range of beers, cask ales, wines and soft drinks. The Rivals Restaurant is open from 12 noon until midnight serving lunch until 3pm and dinner from 5pm to 10pm. The Rivals Bar menu is also available from 12 noon until 10pm.
