Dare Cafe – Headingley

We visited this place about four years ago and it was excellent; hence the return visit on Thursday 8th April 2010. I so wanted to be leaving a positive review but regrettably we were disappointed on this occasion. We booked for 8.30, arrived in good time and were seated immediately. The waiter was very pleasant and I asked him about a particular white wine. He explained that he was new and wasn't sure but could ask. We decided on a white Rioja. Unfortunately we were initially served a red - a simple mistake that was quickly rectified. We ordered various tapas and some plain bread. We were advised that they had run out of bread! We found this somewhat surprising that this could occur at such an early time in the evening. We were not offered an alternative. Had it been my place, I would have raced to a supermarket in order to offer diners something, even if it meant letting customers know that it may not be up to the usual standard. Our order included a salad with an oil and balsamic vinegar dressing. We both felt that there was a distinct lack of the balsamic. We were asked late on in the meal if all was OK and we mentioned this and were offered more but we had almost finished and there seemed little point. From the dessert menu I opted for a selection of Spanish cheeses which I was told was three varieties; Manchego and two other unnamed ones - but this was reduced to two by the time it arrived. I was told that I had been given more of the remaining two but was not given a choice of declining the reduced offerring. The majority of the food was of a good standard however the evening was somewhat spoiled by the errors and omissions. The waiting staff, despite lacking in knowledge, were pleasant and helpful. When the time came to pay the bill I discussed the problems with a lady I presumed to be the manageress who said she would talk to the chef. She returned to say that they were not prepared to do anything and then said that the bill could be reduced by the cost of the salad. At this point the chef bounded from the kitchen and in a verbally aggressive tone, said that with the bread issue we could have had an alternative such as dough balls - this was not offerred at the time and is more akin to Pizza Hut and hardly authentic Spanish fayre! The manageress proceeded to tell us that she had checked the salad bowl and confirmed that it did contain balsamic vinegar - how did she do this I wonder? Is there a special balsamic vinegar testing kit available to the catering trade or did she lick the dish? After further heated discussion in full view of other diners, the bill was reduced by the cost of the cheese selection. All we were looking for was a gesture of goodwill in light of our reduced dining experience, however the whole evening has left us with a bitter taste in our mouths and we will not return.

I went on a Thursday evening and the place was full, so I was a bit apprehensive to stay, but the staff are extremely reassuring and pleasant and they bent over backwards to accommodate us! A great start - we tried a bottle of house wine which was perfectly chilled! However, the food was the star of the show, truly beautiful dishes with real ingredients and great value! I will be returning to this place for my birthday!

I went to Girgio's with a friend for a mid week early meal and was surprised to see that the restaurant was really busy. After eating there, I knew why! The food was fantastic - me and a friend shared a starter of calamari, courgettes and prawns which was delicious and more than enough for 2 (despite only being a starter for 1!). For main, I had lasagna and we shared a salad. The lasagna was the best I've had in any restaurants in the area and I thought the overall bill was very reasonable. The house wine was really good too! The restaurant inside is really nice, but the lighting could possibly be dimmed a little to create more ambience - this is my only slightly negative point but I will definitely go back.

Chez

Visited Giorgio's on 27th March 2010 - food was great, menu interesting with some lovely specials. We had booked a table for two at 7pm, didn't get sat down till 7.15 and everything was over by 8pm! It was extremely busy and we were asked to move from our table as soon as we decided not to have a dessert even though my husband still had a drink. We were offered a free drink at the bar but it was so full that there was nowhere to sit down. Service was too fast, we had asked for a starter, pizza course then the main (as is common in Italy) and the pizza and main were brought out together. The calzone pizza was really bland with little filling. The bill was £82 including the service charge but we didn't not want to pay the service charge because of being rushed and asked to leave the table...(my husband said this but it was taken anyway). Food 7/10 my king scallops with lobster sauce and tagliatelle pasta was gorgeous, decor 8/10, atmosphere 5/10 too rushed, service 5/10.

Went with a party of 6 family members, and we were a bit cautious about trying somewhere new. There are so few independently owned restaurants doing Italian food these days, as many of those opening in recent years are part of large national chains. We are so glad we tried it. The food was very good quality both in taste and presentation, there are lots of interesting choices and the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. We were not rushed in any way and it was a totally relaxing and enjoyable experience. We look forward to going again.

This restaurant is a little gem - absolutely loved the place! So relaxing, good choice of Italian wines and the food is very very tasty! I had a pizza and a bresoala starter - Have taken my girlfriend at least once a week! lol Would recommend to all - well done Giorgios!

The Seawards

First visit since this extended restaurant opened on the former site of Pietro's - which we loved and visited on many occasions. However, needn't have worried - very modern, staff very friendly, good atmosphere, tables not too squashed (unlike some other local Italians), decent food and decent service. Highly recommend.

Went in their third week of being opened and found it extremely busy but with a very friendly young staff who went out of their way to accommodate us even though we hadn't booked. We are vegetarian and vegan and the vegan is wheat intolerant but we managed to eat and drink fairly well and it was lovely to have a gluten-free pasta option. A few slight problems with what is considered suitable for vegetarians (a dish with anchovies was labelled with a V, as were a few dishes containing Parmesan cheese which is always made with animal rennet) but the dishes we had were tasty and wholesome and presented well, not fussy but quite rustic. We had a bottle of white wine and two glasses of red, one starter, two main courses (my mushroom risotto was excellent), a side of spinach with garlic and olive oil and we each had a glass of amaretto and my partner had a double espresso which he said was really good. Service was included and the meal came to about £60 which was fairly good value. We will definitely go again but will make sure we book next time and I hope this new restaurant will be here to stay.

I would love to write a review about the food at this establishment but regrettably, for myself and Dos Amigos, all I can do is write about the worst service I have ever experienced. I called up to book at 20:40 on a Friday night and was told there would be no problem with a table. As we were in the vicinity I and my partner arrived within 10 minutes. We were shown to a table and give a menu. At 21:10 the waitress finally actually took our order, despite sitting at the table with our menus down trying to get her attention for about 15 minutes. We ordered a couple of drinks and our meal. We then sat there until 22:05 awaiting our food, eventually we managed to talk to a waitress when we noticed someone who had come in after us eating. We were told that they had lost the order and nothing had been done on our food. A very curt apology was offered. At this point I paid for my drinks, left and ate at a different restaurant. Needless to say I will not be visiting again. I would have understood if the restaurant was particularly busy, but there were 16 people in the restaurant (I counted, I had plenty of time). The waitresses simply believed that having a nice chat behind the till was a better use of there time.

We went to this restaurant for valentine's day and we were not disappointed. The decor is gorgeous, staff are so friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We sat downstairs which is dominated by a beautiful tree covered in fairy lights. There is an outside eating area which i imagine is lovely in summer, we certainly plan to return! Along with the main menu there is also a healthy eating option which notes the calorie value, fat content etc - for us ladies it makes a nice change to be able to eat out but know you are still eating sensibly! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, especially for a special occasion.

This place is fantastic, the food is great and their wine selection is really good too! The food is really authentic and absolutely well worth it. Really love this place, you can tell it is run by passionate people who take pleasure out of what they do which makes a welcome change these days!

This was my first time eating Moroccan food and unfortunately the spices were not to my taste. However, the atmosphere and service were excellent, and the food was perfectly cooked and presented. Well worth a visit for those who like this style of cooking.

My two colleagues and I had lunch here on Tuesday to celebrate a birthday. Not only was the food delicious and substantial we were also presented with the most delicious fresh fruit plate with yoghurt/honey and pistachio nuts after we’d ordered our bill. The waitress noticed the birthday card we’d presented to our friend… and that’s all it took! Excellent value with very friendly (and observant) staff!

This used to be my favourite restaurant in the whole world. It had a wonderful lady maitre d' who welcomed you as if you were favourite relatives come for Sunday lunch. I haven't been back since the restaurant changed hands and a waiter stood behind my chair pointing out what I was eating. Now, I may be old fashioned but it appears to me that what you are eating should be self-evident. However, I had never seen lamb compressed into a cube and sauces served in shot glasses before. This was some time ago so I don't know if the restaurant has changed hands again. Oh, I do hope so!

Beware - Nice meal and lovely desserts, and the service was fine. However, there are signs saying cocktails, two for one on Wednesdays everywhere, including the menu. We had four and were charged for four. I queried this and the waitress said it only applied to certain drinks in the downstairs section. This isn't made clear anywhere. She knocked half off but make sure you're aware of this if you go. Apart from that, a decent place, if lacking a little atmosphere.
