I personally don? see what the fuss is with this place, yes you know where the steak comes from but it isn? the best tasting steak around and the price they charge is very expensive. I just think they like to charm people with the wonderful views and location and the tale of were everything comes from and for that privilege they charge you a lot more. The veg and salad is very good but the chips taste like overdone crisps and they charge you near six pounds for a dessert the beer is expensive to but kept well. Ive had the sirloin the mix grill and chilli con carne, the grill was the only one of note but for 35 pounds it should be. My partner had chilli and it just tasted of tough mince in canned tomato's. The place is lovely to visit and have a walk round and a pint maybe or they have a fantastic selection of the best whiskeys there is but although its always good to know where the food comes from it just seems an excuse to charge a lot more. There? smaller establishments that are doing the same thing for cheaper and just as good quality and i when you see the owner he just stands at the till with a pound signs in his eyes and a smug look on his face.

A STEAK RESTAURANT TO RIVAL THE BEST! My boyfriend and I both love our steaks, and having heard about this restaurant tucked away in the hills, and famous for its home reared meat we thought we would give it a try. The first thing to blow you away is the setting; now I know why they call it a destination restaurant! (You will have to see for yourself to understand what I mean). Inside is a cosy place, with emphasis very much on traditional features. The menu is extensive and offers a lot of choice, but it was straight to the steak page for us! 7oz Fillet for me and a 14oz Sirloin for him. I only have a small appetite, when my plate arrived I nearly passed out, I thought I would have enough to feed me for the next few days! However, we both cleared our plates; the meal was fantastic - real chips - and the steak... lets just say, it won? be our last visit! I think Manchester has a new contender for the best steak restaurant category. I nearly forgot to mention the whisky bar, the bar man told us they have a collection of nearly 500 whiskies! A very special place well worth a mention. See you again soon!

The greatest steak I have ever eaten, it just melts in your mouth. And the meat fridge is certainly something to see, I can;t think of any other places you can so readily see where the food comes from and the place it is all put together. The owners are really friendly and you don't feel like you've gone out to a restaurant for dinner, you feel like you've been invited to a family's dinner.

Just wanted to give a reply to Tim in my defence - The comments on the menu aren't meant to be smug, just quite humorous and an indication of the fact that unlike large chains we are able to inject our own real thoughts and comments into our menu (appealing to many, but not all I agree). Coincidence that you should think the place is like someone's home as when we finished building the place most of our furniture and pictures from home went into the restaurant as our bank pulled out on us at the last minute. Feeling homely was accidental, but has worked for the last 14 years. Finally show me somewhere that's serving their own beasts, butchered by them, with the knowledge of all the food on the plate and we'll not promote the issue so much!

I came across this place a few years ago and although I don't live on the doorstep, I visit when I get the chance. Great to see on the last visit (last weekend) that there have been some changes, but there is no decline in quality and the steaks are still brilliant. I don't know of any other restaurateur who can give the name of the animal you are eating, or which field your veggies came from!

I regularly visit the Fisherman's Retreat because I like the fact you get good quality home-made food that is cooked well and tastes fantastic. I think it is something to be proud of (and boast about) if you are able to provide customers with freshly prepared traceable produce - more and more people are interested in where their food comes from and what goes into it nowadays - they no longer want to be fed rubbish and the Fisherman's rises to this challenge. I think the restaurant itself is extremely warm and welcoming - the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the owners are normally around to say hi and welcome you to their establishment, and the roaring fires in winter make you want to stay the night! I noticed that someone commented on how the family pictures made the restaurant feel like they were entering someone's home - well in a way they are. The family have built the restaurant from scratch and made it the success it is today - I am proud to be welcomed into their 'home' and thoroughly enjoy looking at the pictures that tell the story of how the place has developed over the years. I hope the restaurant is there to be enjoyed for many more years, and plenty of pictures are taken to remember it all! Thanks.

I have been eating here for a very long time and, whenever I have visitors - from overseas or within the UK - I always take them along. Without exception they have always been impressed, and more than one friend has commented on the "homey" ambience. Unlike "Tim", I find it very interesting to see what they do for charity - as a donator to the Kilimanjaro walk it's very gratifying to see people in action, giving up their time, for someone less fortunate. There are lots of good restaurants around with great menus. It's very refreshing to see one that lays it on the line about the quality of food being served, with a touch of humour thrown in for good measure! Keep up the good work, and see you on Sunday.

This pub does what it does well but don't they go on about it! Yes, the chips are real but let's not get too excited about the ability to fry a potato. The menu is poorly written with smug comments about not serving cr*p to children and well done steak being like shoe leather. The beer is very well kept but a wider selection would be nice. The landlord's ego is catered for with lots of pictures of himself and family( and their unsung charity work!) dotted around the place. This makes the customer feel like a visitor in someones home and , as a result, one doesn't feel like outstaying one's welcome.

I found this restaurant by chance the other day. It was brilliant. I felt like I was miles out in the country and away from it all, but we were only about three miles from town. I had steak which was the tastiest ever. My wife, a veggie had the homemade cheese and onion pie and loved it, but the real chips topped it all off. Also apparently you can go into their fridge and see the beef before you get your steak. I may take up that offer when the wife's not there!

I cannot fault this restaurant in the slightest. The food was superb, cooked to perfection! The service was outstanding and the whole atmosphere made my evening very enjoyable. I was especially pleased with the non-smoking policy throughout the restaurant.

We ate at this restaurant yesterday. They have an adult only dining-room which was great for us on a night out without our children! The pie was homemade with real shortcrust pastry, and the rib-eye was the best I've tasted. They rear their own beef, trout and deer, and serve it on the menu! Definitely will go back.

This has got to be the best pub grub i have ever tasted.... The meals are huge for the price you pay. You can even choose your own pig out of the garden.
