As usual we had a wonderful lunch at Bistro One. Mr Barrett is helpful and friendly and makes excellent recommendations. No wonder they have won the title of Best Restaurant in Plymouth for 2011!! We had bangers and mash with braised cabbage for £5 and it was delicious.

We were visiting Plymouth and wanted Oysters and found Bistro One via Sugarvine. We were offered Oysters both Raw and Grilled and promptly devoured a dozen each. Fab! Our wine was a surprise as we were recommended to try a Sicilian Catarratto - never heard of it but what a wine it turned out to be. Lemon scented and perfect with the sea-flavoured Oysters. Couldn't have been better, very simple and very fresh. Job done, we look forward to our next visit.

We had heard that Bistro One had some Game on the menu so promptly booked. To our surprise we were offered Game Soup, Game Terrine, Paupiettes of Pheasant and Haunch of Red Deer. we sampled all of these dishes to great acclaim, wonderful natural flavours balanced with excellent garnishes and sauces. Simple House wine turned out to be an excellent Provence Rouge from Cotes de Ventoux punching well above its weight. I understand that this type of menu will be offered for another month or so so like us if Game is your dish do give Bistro One a try.

Visiting, found Bistro One on Sugarvine. Love Oysters so piled in to 6 Raw and 6 Grilled.Fresh as the sea! Glass of Ashridge Sparkling Cider was the offered match - perfect indeed. New to us we had Paupiettes of Gleanie (Cornish for Guinea Fowl) stuffed with Spinach and toasted Almonds plus Bocaddon Farm Calves Liver with Dry Cured Bacon. The wine recommendation was a Cabernet Sauvignon from Pikes of Clare Valley in S Australia and lovely it was too! Tarte au Citron and Gluten-Free Chocolate and Chilli Cake "finished us off" but not before a glass of Argentinian Late Harvest Torrontes! All simply divine. This is excellently delivered Bistro Cooking showing good value. Surprises on the menu with some off-the-wall wines make it a definite favourite venue to search out. We recommend you do.

Have been going to Bistro One for over a year now when visiting Plymouth. I particularly like the changing menu as I am an avid supporter of local food and this restaurant delivers with great fish like Gurnard, Grey Mullet and Atlantic Octopus. Also enjoyed Venison Bourguignon and some excellent Squinzano from Southern Italy. Great consistency at Bistro One, looking forward already to my next visit when I am promised local Calves Liver.

We went back to Bistro One after a while away from Plymouth. December is not always the best time to experience good food and wine due to larger parties but this was an exception with an excellent atmosphere and sympathetic cooking. We ate simply with Venison as our main course with a lovely bottle of Spanish red wine. Faultless cooking and a smashing evening. This is an excellent Bistro we love to visit and will more in 2009. Bravo to Bistro One. Robin

We spent a very enjoyable evening at Bistro One last night. Everything, from the food to the wine, was delicious, perfectly complemented each other and cooked to perfection. The portion sizes were generous too. The waitress was very helpful and Mr Barrett, who was head chef last night, seemed happy to talk to us and kindly shared his expertise in wine. A lovely night in a relaxed atmosphere, we will definitely be back - possibly even for the wine tasting course!

Do not be put off by the outside, as inside you will be able to enjoy 'michelin star' food accompanied by some excellent wines, which are both at reasonable prices. That day we got soaked (Wed 9.7.08) going to an all day conference. The highlight was our first visit to Bistro One. When next visiting Plymouth, I'll be trying other dishes on the menu, even though the beef was as good as one could wish for, cooked to perfection.

After a few tries at dining here we finally ate with friends last week. We all love good seafood and had the Bistro Seafood Meze which comprised Mussels Oysters, Scallops, marinated Octopus and Squid, Crevettes and Clams. Great value at £36 for two persons washed down with some great Spanish Blanco from Calatayud. We all stayed on to enjoy the puds and cheeses that included, Lemon Sylabub with Sherrry and ginger Biscotti and Lemon and Treacle Tart, lovely they were too. Will return in summer to have a go at Lobster! Can't wait. John and Betty

Very good food and atmosphere. We enjoyed a real mixture of food with simple Bistro Fare. Last week we tried Soused Herrings, brilliant Oysters, Linguine of Clams and Mussels as well as a wonderful Cassoulet of Pheasant and Venison. Seasonal cheese included Vacherin Mont d'Or and a funky Chocolate and Stilton Tart. Knowledgeable staff really able to guide you to the right dishes on the night. Loved the Sharpham New Release and the coffee was tops. This is a really casual/laid-back Bistro, one which we really love and would go back whenever we can. Heartily recommended.
