About Black Boy Inn

The Black Boy Inn is one of the oldest hostelries in Wales, dating back to 1522, and is situated within the medieval town walls of the Royal Borough of Caernarfon. In days of old, Northgate Street used to be the town's red light district and was known as Stryd Pedwar a Chwech in Welsh, which literally translates as Four and Six Street, and for this princely sum (about 22p), you could get a room here with a bottle of gin and the services of a young lady for the night! Times have changed but this characterful independent free house still offers guests a warm welcome. The bar's thick stone walls, low ceilings and heavy oak beams are the perfect backdrop to enjoy the Black Boy's Cask Marque real ales. The restaurant team, headed by Head Chef Martyn Rae, is committed to local Welsh organic produce and fresh seafood and these feature prominently on both a the a la carte and chalkboard specials. Starters include Smoked mackerel and mango pate served with rocket and Melba Toast and Caerphilly cheese tart which comes with salad and chutney. Hearty main courses include Traditional Caernarfon Lob Scouse, shin of Welsh Black beef cooked with onions, root vegetables and potatoes in a stock, served with chunky bread and Quarry Man's Faggots served on crushed potato with onion gravy. There are also international dishes, vegetarian options, steaks from the grill, burgers, baguettes and a children's menu. You can also stay at the Black Boy in one of 16 ensuite bedooms which combine the inn's historic charm with modern facilities.

A great overall restaurant. Good for families as well as it has a quiet and relaxed atmosphere. The staff are really helpful and curteous to customers. The food is of very high standard and supports local produce. Home made recipes. Very good portion sizes of meals and excellent value for money. Overall wonderful place to visit.
