Having previously eaten at their sister pub - The Old Bore in Rishworth - I thought I'd give their new venture a whirl. I was mightily impressed. The food here is excellent and great value.
I went for Sunday Lunch which offered the usual suspects plus a couple of surprises. I had the tarragon potato cake which was lovely and light - and the beetroot and fettle cheese salad was an excellent accompaniment. My companion thought the black pudding equally good.
For a main I opted for the venison steamed suet pudding. Again it was of the highest quality... succulent pieces of meat in a rich wine gravy. I think the last time I had suet was for school dinners and this erased all those awful memories of stodgy, chewy gloop sticking to the inside of one's mouth. Our other main was the Old Spot Pork which, again, was cooked to perfection. It actually tasted like pig should and melted in the mouth, which is a pleasant change from most Sunday afternoon offerings these days.
A quick mention for the side of mash, cauliflower and roasts: mash that actually tasted of something; roast potatoes with bite; and cauliflower that hadn't had every possible nutrient boiled out of it... if only more places would send out veg like this.
That quality for £30 is remarkable. Fair play to whoever's in the kitchen. I've spent double that amount elsewhere and it's not been anywhere near as good. The young waiting staff were uniformly excellent too.
All in all, a very pleasurable experience and I'm looking forward to returning to try out other dishes on the menu. I can't recommend this place highly enough. I only wish it was nearer to Leeds!

Second visit to the Carlton Bore, once again the food was great, the extensive menu makes it hard to choose, we all thoroughly enjoyed what we had - only minor complaint is the service let it down on this occasion - the vegetables didn't arrive with the main course and had to ask for them - then they turned up without anything to serve them with. Scott needs to tackle his front of house staff - they are letting the side down. Hopefully there will be an improvement on our next visit.
