Food-driven family run pub in rural Ollerton on the outskirts of Knutsford.

About Dun Cow

The Dun Cow sits on the outskirts of Knutsford in a pleasant rural location in Ollerton. The building dates back 400 years and what was originally a row of cottages is today a series of interconnected rooms all on one level. The pub retains many of the original features in the various dining rooms and bar area whilst outside there's a new garden area. The Dun Cow is very much a food-driven pub with an extensive menu ranging from steaks, burgers, pies, sandwiches and salads to more elaborate international dishes like Bouillabaisse and Kleftiko 'Thieves Lamb'. There's a special children's menu too. Robinsons real ales complete the picture along with a compact but well-chosen wine list.

Lovely food. Partner loved the black pudding, I loved the Crispy Duck salad - wonderful, unusual flavours. Nice friendly family pub with possibly the youngest waiter in the North, Theo (aged 9 or so). Very helpful and hard working! What a great place, will definitely go again.

My wife & I were looking forward to eating at the Dun Cow in view of the good reviews we had read and the award it received in 2011, but in the event we were very disappointed. The atmosphere was good, the staff courteous and attentive. However, although the menu was good and the food well presented, there was a fundamental error in that the plates were barely warm and the food including the soup were lukewarm which severely compromised the whole eating experience. Also we should have been asked if everything was OK during the main course, not waiting until we had finished. One other strange occurrence concerned the cleaning and polishing of the very large table which took an inordinate length of time and consumed much energy by the young waiter. Is the table a valuable antiques for so much love to be dedicated to it? If another award is to be gained in 2012, then attention must be paid to the temperature of the food and plates, and enquiries made if everything is OK during the main course.

The Dun Cow has recently been taken over by new management in July 2009. My husband and I expected good things as the same team and chef catered our wedding this year and all our guests raved about the food. We ate in the restaurant last night and the food was amazing. The quality, presentation and attention to detail made us feel like we were in a top restaurant, not a country pub. The staff were very friendly and the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. The setting is a traditional, cosy pub, but the food is by no means pub grub - superb! We can't wait to go again and take our friends and family. Good work Barry and Marc.

How nice to see this lovely pub sympathetically refurbished after years in the doldrums. The new tenants have created a warm and friendly atmosphere, with the promise of open fires in the winter. The Robinson's beer is well kept and there's a decent, although short, wine list. But I suspect it will be the food that makes the Dun Cow's reputation. It is simply exquisite - none better in the whole of Cheshire! I would recommend you visit and see for yourselves.
