About East End Arms

Tucked away just off the beaten track between Lymington and the heart of the New Forest, the East End Arms is a traditional English country inn beloved by locals and visitors alike. Bought in 1990 by John Illsley, the bass guitarist of Dire Straits, it has grown into a destination venue, offering a relaxed atmosphere, locally brewed ales and a menu that caters to all tastes. Upstairs, the five stylish double bedrooms are individually designed with quality furnishings and comfort in mind, a perfect base to explore the New Forest.

Wonderful restaurant where we enjoyed two consecutive dinners. Food of the highest quality, service excellent, prices very fair and a nice ambience. Highly recommend, thank you.

My husband and I had dinner on Saturday evening (28 February 2026) and booked a table for 6.30 pm. We chose to eat early as the restaurant is much quieter at that time. Our previous experience of eating later was that the restaurant was very noisy, so much so that we chose to eat in the bar area of the pub. We had an enjoyable evening in the restaurant this time. I had a delicious sweet potato risotto with baby spinach and my husband had one of the specials - beef stroganoff, which he said was excellent. We both had a selection of ice cream to finish. I had a small glass of Rose , as I was driving, and my husband had a pint of Guinness. The restaurant automatically adds a 10% service charge to your bill. Our total came to just under £60.00 which I thought was pricey for what we had. The staff were attentive, but it wasn’t service with a smile. I felt we were being judged for ordering a jug of tap water for the table and only one alcoholic drink each. Although, we weren’t even asked if we would like another drink, not even coffee. As others have said, the menu is very limited if you are a vegetarian. It may be worth phoning ahead to let them know, so that they may be able to provide some alternative options.

Having previously enjoyed meals at the East End Arms, we invited friends to join us for a meal there on Saturday evening. On arrival we were immediately given an apology that the restaurant was about to close for a holiday break and the menu was restricted, and this proved to be true. The menu appeared more limited than I remembered and we were also informed that certain dishes on the menu were no longer available. When the meals arrived in some respects it also appeared that they were running out of supplies. The quantities of food also seemed to be rather restricted - very few vegetables. Also whereas our bookng was for 7.30, it transpired we were the last booking on that night, and it seemed all along that the staff were keen to get us to place our orders and get us served and out of the door. All in all whereas we were hoping to impress our friends as it was their first time there, I rather suspect they will not be rushing back.

We had a lunch on Wednesday. We were the only customers in the restaurant at 1pm The meal was very enjoyable and service was very good. The only downside was a gentleman sat in the restaurant, presumably a member of staff who was sorting the shifts etc to cover the pub/restaurant for the next couple of days. The conversation wasn’t quiet and a bit offensive at one point. It didn’t spoil our meal but it would have been better not to have listened to him. It finished when a large table had to be served!!
