About Fat Loaf

The Fat Loaf has been at the heart of the local dining scene in Ashton-on Mersey, near Sale, for many a year. The classy neighbourhood restaurant has built up a great reputation for its modern European cooking based on local and seasonal produce with suppliers name-checked on the menu. It’s also very reasonably priced. Chef-patron Tim Wood has a wealth of experience in Michelin-starred kitchens and he and his team work from an open kitchen. The restaurant seats about 50 and in summer the bi-folding windows are opened up for al fresco dining. In addition to the main menu, there’s a great-value Lunch/Early Dinner menu and on Tuesdays you can bring your own wine with no corkage charge. The Fat Loaf is open for lunch and coffee Wednesday to Friday and for dinner from 5.30pm until late Tuesday to Saturday.

Four of us dined and all agreed the starters were excellent. Two people rated their main course excellent but two were disappointed with the presentation of the belly pork dish. We expected it to be in one piece and to display the full depth of the belly slice. It was therefore rather fatty, with more fat than meat, but the taste was delicious. The desserts were excellent. Although it was very busy, the service was excellent and efficient. Atmosphere vibrant but a bit noisy.

This was a gem of a find, we visited last night to celebrate my husbands birthday. Great choice of dishes (we are pescatarian), delicious spicy margarita & loved the selection of wines by the glass - I opted for the white wine of the month which was a nice feature. My husband doesn’t drink & they had a more unusual 0% beer on offer rather than the standard Becks Blue etc. I felt the prices were reasonable given the quality of the food, & enjoyed that it was an open kitchen. Service felt very familial which we liked, professional & knowledgeable staff without it being stuffy & pretentious. Decor was subtle & modern. Overall really glad we discovered this as a more local option than going into the city centre. Would definitely go back, perhaps to try the Sunday roast as that seems to have great feedback!

What an amazingly delicious roast dinner and dessert! One of the best I’ve ever had. I’ll be back. And the service was absolutely lovely-warm and professional too. I can’t recommend The Fat Loaf enough
