About Freke Arms

Situated in Swanborough, just outside Highworth, The Freke Arms has been a landmark pub since the early 1800s, when it was built at the behest of local landowner Henry Freke, and has been part of the Arkell's estate since 1892. Following its August 2026 reopening, the pub once again offers its familiar mix of relaxed country charm and generous dining, with menus centred on steaks, classic pub favourites, Sunday roasts and homemade dishes using locally sourced meat where possible. Inside are comfortable dining and drinking areas alongside a snug for private gatherings, while outside there are far-reaching views across the north Wiltshire countryside, a spacious beer garden, ample parking and caravan pitches. Dog friendly and well suited to everything from a leisurely lunch to family celebrations and coach parties, The Freke Arms builds on its long-standing reputation as a welcoming rural destination with character as well as history.

Best Sunday dinner we have had for a long time

Very warm welcome when we arrived. Lovely bunch of girls working. Food was good value for money. All very tasty. Only thing I would say is when you do get a chance maybe think about replacing the chairs & sanding the tables, the tables were extremely sticky.

We had a very nice meal last night at The Freke Arms. We had focaccia and pork crackling to start with, the bread was lovely and warm but the pork crawling was quite crunchy. The Cajun burger was nice and came with cheese as requested, but it is worth noting that if you don’t like mayo, the mango chutney sauce is mayo based. The prawn, crayfish and bacon salad was lovely and very filling. We didn’t have space for dessert, but did have a cappuccino and an espresso instead which were both good. The service was good and the pub looked as though it has been recently redecorated. We had a very good evening and would go back again.

We visited The Freke under the new management in their first week . We received a warm welcome, the service was very good, despite being busy, and everyone enjoyed their meals. The portions were generous ( the do offer smaller plates too) and there was something on the menu to suit everyone plus a specials board . The interior decor has been refreshed and seemed much brighter inside. We will all look forward to going again.

Took hubby first Birthday lunch on 6th August 2026. I had booked online the night before and we wete greeted very warmly by a lovely blond girl who took us to our table and took drink orders before then taking our food order. We both opted for smaller plate of the Wiltshire ham, egg & chips - wow! If that's the smaller plate the normal portion must be huge! It was delicious, nice very thickly cut tasty ham, chips & egg cooked to perfection, lovely salad garnish which had a drizzle of the most refreshing salad dressing ive ever had....I think it may have been a pesto type dressing? Anyhow, very tasty indeed. We managed to have space for a tasy dessert, hubby opted for sticky toffee pudding & custard while I went for the lemon meringue roulade.....well again, portions were huge and had us beat! The atmosphere was lovely, much busier than I expected for a Thursday lunchtime and the fact its only just reopened. Prices are very reasonable with a good choice of meals on the menu and specials board. The staff are happy, friendly, attentive and polite. The pub itself very clean, smart and comfortable, decor is great. All in all a very welcoming and tasty experience and we will certainly return.

Visited after many happy times with Karen & Dave (oh you are missed). I had Fish & Chips which was excellent. Wife had ham, egg & chips, again very good with excellent portions. Only black mark was no draught Arkles on Tuesday. A little surprised that Arkles allowed this to happen.
