About Grants Of Castlegate

Grants of Castlegate in Penrith is a modern British bistro and wine bar with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. It’s housed in a characterful Victorian building with a small, sheltered garden to the rear. Chef-patron Stephen Tierney has worked in hotels and restaurants in Scotland, London, Miami, Alaska and Australia and he draws on that experience to produce carefully cooked dishes based around the best local ingredients. The menu is vegetarian friendly with vegan option too and as well as fine wines and local beers there is a large selection of spirits and liqueurs, including single malts.  Grants of Castlegate is open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday. They also have a furnished holiday let available if you wish to base yourself in Penrith and explore the local area.

We are visiting Lake District from the US and had dinner at Grants of Castlegate as a group of six. The food was beautifully prepared and delicious, and everyone in our party was very happy with their dishes. The service was warm, attentive and professional throughout, making us feel genuinely welcome. A lovely atmosphere and an excellent dining experience—we would happily return and highly recommend it.

My partner and I ate at Grants’ on 30 August. The staff were very attentive and helpful. We both had the sea trout, which was delicious. If we had a small criticism, we don’t like having to pay extra for vegetables that we feel should be included in the price of the meal. To be fair, a lot of restaurants do this and it takes the shine off the dining experience for us. However, we would still recommend Grants’ because of the food quality.

Delightful dining. Beautifully well balanced flavours in a well put together menu. Pleasant surroundings where one could hold a conversation without overly loud music. Which is nice for a change. Attentive staff who didn't interrupt the dining experience. I would highly recommend Grants of Castlegate for quality food served well. Priced fairly for the quality of ingredients and the chefs obvious skills at combining them.

We had an excellent pre theatre meal at Grants. The food was delicious with a good choice on the pre theatre menu. The service was extremely good with the waiting staff ensuring we were happy but not constantly asking!! I have only given 4 for atmosphere as the restaurant was very quiet, presumably because it was early evening.

First time at Grants last night. They did a 2 or 3 course early evening (pre-theatre) menu which was absolutely delicious. Service was excellent. We will definitely go again before attending Penrith players. Perfect evening. So glad we have found this little gem.

We stayed in Penrith for one night on our way to Scotland and found this amazing restaurant. The menu was enticing and the food was incredible. We received a lovely warm welcome and loved the whole experience. So sad that we live in Hampshire and not closer! I can highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely visit again on our next trip to Penrith.
