The Hare and Hounds is a beautiful 16th century coaching inn set in the pretty village of Levens in the Lyth Valley, near Kendal. It’s a proper village pub, full of character, with a restaurant serving delicious comfort food, five individually styled ensuite bedrooms, local cask ales on tap and a mean cocktail list. Head Chef Allan Kay has been part of the team since Ash and Becky Dewar bought the freehold in 2013 and his menu offers a choice of homemade burgers and classic thin-crust pizzas as well as mains like Chargrill ribeye steak, Pork and damson sausages with black pudding mash, Greek-style lamb stew and Pan-fried fillet of seabass. The main menu is available all day every day from 12 noon to 9pm and weekdays there’s also a lighter lunch menu with soups, sandwiches and sharing boards. You can choose where to eat too – in The Barn restaurant with its views down the valley, al fresco on the new terrace beer garden or cosied up by the fire in the pub. Pizzas, burgers and fish & chips are also available as takeaway. The Hare and Hounds is also a great base from which to explore this beautiful part of the worlds. Rooms are named after previous owners and landlords and all have dreamy beds, gleaming bathrooms, thick carpets and thoughtful touches like homemade brownies and fresh coffee.
