About The Hour Glass Inn

The Hour Glass Inn is a traditional Exeter pub dating back to 1848 that’s close to the Quay and just five minutes from the city centre. It was rescued from closure by Exeter Brewery and a sympathetic refurb has retained its real character with original features including a wood-panelled dining room and an open fire. The menu is built around local, seasonal produce with Devon suppliers namechecked on the website. And complementing the accomplished cooking there’s an interesting selection of wines as well as the well-kept beers you would expect and a great range of whiskies. The Hour Glass Inn also runs a Quiz Night every Monday and a Vinyl Night once a month.

If I didn’t live so far away, I’d keep this place a secret and not write a review. But I do, so happy to tell you we had a fabulous meal, tried almost all in the menu between us and the excellence of the food was matched only by the quality of the service we received. Hats off to both the kitchen staff and front of house. Thank you and we’ll be back next time we visit Exeter.

Sam is the man. Handled my situation perfectly when I was forced to cancel last minute. This kind of service is usually only to be had from top London restaurants. So pleased to see your pub makes sure to hire the right people and get the best from them.

We had Sunday lunch here and the food was fabulous. My wife had the beef and my mum and I had the chicken - meat was succulent, gravy very rich and tasty, crispy roast potatoes and large Yorkshire puddings. Staff were very attentive and helpful as my mum has sight and mobility issues and nothing was too much trouble. Also, a good selection of ales too as a bonus! Would definitely recommend and we will certainly be going again!

Fantastic Sunday roast for two of us visiting, the location is a real gem if you know where to look and was a real treat. Would recommend as a great off-the-quay watering hole or spot to catch up. A real ship setting with wooden beams and floors, a tour de force of helpful staff and happy patrons. My only suggestion would be to park at the quay and walk over rather than circle for a parking spot or risk Topsham road. But well worth the travel.

We had a wonderful evening. , the pub has a lovely atmosphere. The staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. One of our group requested to change the cheese on their burger and the staff passed the request to the kitchen and it happened without any fuss. The Exeter brewery beer selection was excellent.

Excellent meal and very attentive team. We had a booking with a few allergies and intolerances and the team were very accommodating and went through the menu with us to ensure there was no problems. The food was gorgeous and the service brilliant - we will return!
