The Howard Arms in Brampton is an old coaching inn that dates back to the 18th century. Family run, it’s recently undergone a major refurbishment by Thwaites that seamlessly combines the rustic and the modern. There are glass doors, stone floors and two large fireplaces at either end of the building and historical memorabilia adorning the walls, including from the time when Charles Dickens was a guest here. As well as the bar and restaurant areas, there’s a separate function room with its own bar, a beer garden and eight well-equipped bedrooms if you fancy using the Howard Arms as a base to explore nearby Hadrians Wall, southern Scotland and the Lake District. It’s a dog-friendly venue too with house dogs Sam and Paris on hand to keep your pooch company. Food is served seven days a week from 8am to 9pm and you can expect traditional homemade pub food as well as a minimum of four real ales on tap. Regular quiz nights, jazz nights and even a ukulele night!
