About Inn at Whitewell

The Inn at Whitewell is a characterful traditional rural inn that's part of the Duchy of Lancaster's estate and sits high on the banks of the River Hodder. With 23 bedrooms oozing charm and many of the original features of the building still intact and beautifully restored, including traditional bathroom fittings and four poster beds, the Inn at Whitewell is the perfect place for lovers of historic buildings and fine dining alike. The inn's restaurant has an excellent reputation for producing seasonal locally sourced dishes like grouse, pheasant and partridge from the Lancashire moors, and you will always find Bowland beef and Lonk lamb on the menu, staples sourced from Burholme Farm in the heart of the beautiful Forest of Bowland, the oldest farm owned by the Duchy of Lancaster. Head Chef Jamie Cadman has notched up many awards over the years by sticking to an ethos of ‘food cooked simply to let the real quality shine through'. The dining rooms provide reassuringly scenic views over the estate's fells while the many original open fireplaces offer up an inviting prospect on a chilly winter's afternoon. Wine lovers will enjoy the small but perfectly formed wine shop, Bowland Forest Vintners. The shop is positively bursting at the seams with an array of wines selected from smaller producers and single vineyards; you are sure to find something special here to take home with you and if wine isn't your bag then take a look at the selection of quality gifts displayed in the elegant glass cabinets just opposite the vintners -- everything from merino wool hunting socks to leather pouch bags. The inn has also just introduced Japanese spa treatments which can be enjoyed in the comfort of your room and at certain times of the year fishing and shooting are popular pursuits. Staff are always available to provide maps and advice about the many walks on offer in and around the valley and the inn is also a favorite with cyclists. If you fancy a longer stay, The Piggeries is a three-bedroomed holiday home located in the inn's grounds offering the space and freedom of a home-from-home but with the convenience of the inn on your doorstep.

Love love this place. Had a gorgeous lunchtime meal there yesterday looking out a beautiful views of the Lancashire countryside. A regular haunt that I always recommend to others so I thought I would do that on Sugarvine too :)

The Inn at Whitewell is one of our favourite places in the Country. Surely the best Bolthole in Lancashire. Situated by the river Hodder in the Trough of Bowland, this historic property has it all. Top quality food from it's restaurant and bar menu, an incredible wine list and on-site vintners, good friendly service, a perfect location for taking in the countryside, period rooms complete with Victorian/Edwardian bathroom pieces. The places oozes character and is strongly recommended by us.

A truly wonderful country Inn. Definitely one of Englands finest! An inpromptu stay as our car was stuck on an icy road nearby. What a place to be stuck! I love the intact Georgian feel the place has, the wonderful curios and its attention to detail. A must stay venue!

Had a wonderful Lunch here yesterday with a stunning view to boot. This has got to be one of the best places to visit in the North of England. It has it all, history, location, views and great food and wine.

Visited for a bar meal on 15/9.07. Limited choice on the menu and very, very expensive for pub food. Fish, chips and peas cost more that £10.50. Chips were inedible -enormous and hard inside, overcooked and "hard baked" on the outside. When we complained to a waiter my plate was removed. Waiter returned some minutes later with the same plate to tell me that the chef had said that the problem was with the type of potatoes used and that he had added some more of the offending chips to my plate!!! Not worth the 60 mile round trip. Doubt if we'll ever go again.

lovely historic building with a distinct country gentry feel to it, food is very good and worthy of a top restaurant rather than an inn the only thing thing is the portions could be better and the chips where frozen chips which was a big letdown, the staff where a bit too keen to please by repeatedly asking if everything is ok, but other than that we enjoyed the experience.
Inn at Whitewell
Wonderful food served in a beautifully appointed restaurant, situated at a bend in the river Hodder. You should try and stay the night as the rooms are truly unique.
