About Lewis’s Bistro

Lewis’s Bistro sits at the heart of the Lake District in Grasmere. This modern, family run venue seats just 24 per sitting so booking is advised. All dishes are cooked fresh to order - and where possible locally sourced - and the kitchen has a comprehensive understanding of allergens and a wide range of gluten-free dishes on offer. You might start with black pudding and mushrooms served with a spicy peppercorn sauce and micro-salad or Three pan-fried scallops with a pea puree and pancetta. Mains include Cumbrian fillet steak, Grasmere roasted lamb rack or a Mediterranean vegetable casserole followed by desserts such as Sticky toffee pudding, Bakewell tart and a Cumbrian cheeseboard. Lewis’s Bistro is fully licensed with a personally chosen selection of wines and spirits. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 5.30pm.

My wife and I were slightly concerned about eating at this restaurant having seen that most main courses were priced at £25 or higher. Would the standard of the meal justify the relatively high cost? However, we were not disappointed with the quality of the food. My wife had the sea bass whilst I had the pork belly. It took a fair while for the meals to arrive, which is a good sign because it suggests that they were cooked to order. Both were very nicely presented and were very tasty indeed. We were pleased with our choices. For dessert we had the cheesecake, lemon and raspberry if I remember correctly. It was nice enough but rather heavy after a substantial main course. We had a medium glass of wine each, one Savingnon blanc and one Chardonnay @ £10 each. The bill came to over £90 but as a special, once in a while evening, it was money well spent

A poor experience. As a single diner (my wife passed 9 years ago) I felt unwelcome and rushed. I travel on my own a lot and have never exoerienced such treatment anywhere else. The online booking site would not let me book for one person - it said no availability. Booking for 2 people was not a problem so thats what i did. When i arrived I explained i was on my own and i was treated as though i shouldn't be there. Despite the restaurannt being almost empty i was told to sit at a central table - probably the worst one in the whole place. I asked to be moved but was told not possible. Thereafter it seemed that they wanted me gone as soon as possible. This was a great shame as the food was quite ok and it wasn't as though i was not spending much. I ordered 3 courses including a fillet steak and wine. All in all, not an enjoyable experience, I felt like i was being discriminated against because i was on my own.

We spent a very enjoyable evening at Lewis's Bistro. We both had fillet steak, mine was part of the stroganoff and it was delicious. Not a cheap meal, but a really enjoyable one and we'd definitely go back. Lovely staff, great atmosphere and excellent food.
