Had a great evening at LOAP- great food and LUCY as charming as ever.

I bought into the hype and went straight to Lucy's on my 1st night in the Lake District, and my was I disappointed!!! The service was so horrible that I actually left feeling unhappy; the food looked like something out of a supermarket take-away bag... and I have no doubt that the drab salad leaves were exactly that! The dessert was nothing like the glorious pudding I'd anticipated, and the cost for all my dismay was way, way too high!! I eat out a lot (twice a week of late) as I travel quite a bit with my job, so I've learnt to be very accommodating of different eateries and regional tastes, but heavens!!! Lucy's is flailing on all counts! The hostess was out rightly rude, the waitresses depressingly dull, and the duck no better than a "2 dine for £10" supermarket special! Plus what is WITH the menu??! I'm only 27 and I was struggling to read it! It's neither cute nor cool... get a graphic designer, or go to a professional printers, that is just poor! I imagine that Lucy (and oh how I'd love to meet her and tell her to her face what I make of her establishment) thinks it's very clever to name drop guests on her menu, but I think her time would be better spent actually preparing the menu items! My deepest sympathies go out to anyone who actually paid to attend her cooking classes! Wow... my displeasure runs deep, but I'll stop here, with 1 final comment on hygiene: my table was sticky and dirty and despite my request to have it cleaned, it remained so! I've never felt so uncomfortable in an eatery, not even at my local kebab shop... it was horrid!! All in all: Lucy's On a Plate = Deep Dissatisfaction On a Plate! (...and in the décor, and in the service... and in the whole squalid affair!!)

Wonderful food at this artisan cafe restaurant. We had a chicken Tagine and a rosti with freshly squeezed orange juice. The venue has real charm and the service was good. A must for lunch if in Ambleside.

If you only eat at one place when you are in ambleside it must be Lucy's..We go up to Ambleside twice a year and Lucy's is always a definate for us. From reading the menu to paying its always been an enjoyable experience.. The menu is a excellent choice of food..Starters are a plenty ...Main Courses make your mouth water and the puddings (if you can manage one) are wonderful If you get the pleasure of meeting Lucy it's a pleasure..She is lovely and has always made us feel really welcome

I visited "Lucy's on a plate" yesterday (02.03.09) with my family. We stumbled across it by accident when out for a mooch around the town! I was very disappointed. Firstly, the cutlery they brought was dirty, the salt & pepper mills were dirty and there were crumbs and slops/spills all along the windowledge. Not very appealing. Decided to eat anyway and give it a whirl as it seemed quite busy. After waiting quite a while to be served (it was busy though) we ordered and waited around 10 mins for food (nice and quick for a busy afternoon. Me and my Mum ordered the rarebit which was quite tasty but nothing special (just one piece cut into 4 with some salad in the middle). My dad however ordered one of the rostis. When it came you could see it was completely swimming in grease. My dad is not a fussy eater at all, but he really did not enjoy it and could only eat about 1/3 because it was so sickly from the grease. I tried a bit and was not impressed at all. OK it could have just been a bad choice but when the waitress asked if our meal was ok and my Dad said his was quite tasty but far too greasy to eat (he was very polite and was not expecting money off or anything) she was very short with him and said "well that's just a hazard of ordering fried food isnt it!!" She really seemed to take offence that he had criticized the food. I can forgive anything apart from rude staff and she certainly put me off going back. I always try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt and think maybe we just ordered the wrong food but general uncleanliness and the attitude of that one particular waitress made me think I will definitely be giving Lucys a miss next time I am in the Lakes.

We were hopeful of a good meal at Lucy's on a Saturday lunch time. We were shown to our table for two, a young waitress took our order and we waited for our drinks. The drinks eventually arrived, we started to wonder where our food had got to, eventually after 45 minutes we were told our order would be a few minutes, 10 minutes later it arrived and it was the wrong order! The waitress apologized and said they could send for the food again, it would only take a few minutes! All this for Soup of the Day and Cheese on Toast. We walked out in disgust after wasting an hour waiting for our lunch. Lucy you need to sort out your service problems or you will lose your customers. We will not be returning.

When we went to book a table for two hours time, the waitress seemed totally stressed out and disinterested in us and we wondered whether we'd made a mistake. However because it looked so enticing from outside we took our table for 2. Things had calmed down, the candles had been lit and the service seemed more under control. The food was lovely, especially the starter, although the main and desserts were not exceptional. Small additions to the menu by Lucy herself added alot of fun and character to the experience. It feels like you're dining in a warm and homely atmosphere. In fact it was so good we returned there the 2nd night, mainly cos the other restaurants in Ambleside were either closed or didn't look as inviting. I'm hoping to return oneday and try the cookery course!

The food was to die for, unpretentious staff, family friendly but great for couples and adult parties also, cannot possibly recommend this fantastic restaurant more strongly!!!

This is a great place for lunch and to buy treats for your own larder!

Had a dining experience, even though all were busy, and were able to use their Bar across the road while we waited - carried our wine back to the restaurant when the Bar received a call our table was ready. We even met Lucy after her night doing her outside catering bit. A great evening, Thanks
