About Off Grid Gourmet at The Sun Inn

It began off the beaten track — quite literally. Down a winding lane outside Hay-on-Wye, Off Grid Gourmet was born: a dining experience powered by the sun, the wind and a little bit of madness. There were no dainty tasting menus or crisply starched waiters - just woodsmoke, long tables and dishes made to share. Everything came off the fire: slow-cooked meats, charred vegetables, buttery puddings. Guests brought their own wine, and OGG supplied the heat, the food, and the laughter. Nights would stretch on by the firepit, coffee and marshmallows under the stars, the kind of evenings that blurred into stories. It was simple, honest, and full of heart — food that brought people together, off-grid and off-script. Now that same spirit has found a new home -  The Sun Inn at Winforton. The fires are still burning, the flavours are still bold, and the welcome’s just as warm. The setting’s changed, but the idea hasn’t: gather people around good food, good drink and the kind of company that makes you forget the clock.

God it was good. Just start to finish, smooth top-quality everything: welcome, atmosphere, menu, service, food. Special but not so special (both in terms of price and frills) that you feel you’d only go twice a year. We went for a long-longed-for dinner out without children but will be back as soon as we can with friends.

My wife & I always go for a pre-Christmas meal in the week before Christmas Day. This meal, at the Sun at Winforton, was the best and most memorable we've enjoyed for years. Every course was delicious, carefully prepared and skillfully executed. Beautiful flavours, generous but not overloaded and great value for money - about £30 a head plus nonalcoholic drinks. We will definitely return. Thank you for a fantastic meal and friendly, professional service.

We had a fantastic dinner here just before Christmas. Beautiful light and fluffy cod croquettes followed by a hearty and delicious iberico pork cheeks and a cracking burnt basque cheesecake to finish with lovely wines throughout. Service was excellent, warm and friendly. Brilliant to see a local pub back open for business. We can’t wait to come back!

Lovely night out, food excellent although our mains of pasta and lambs shoulder could have done with some greens. Service needs polishing but friendly and welcoming.

Evening meal with friends on a Saturday night. Very good food. Unusual starter which was delicious and plentiful. Guinness & Stilton pate. Main course was also good. Service was friendly and prompt but laid back when it came to asking us to pay. Nice atmosphere and very cosy. Great addition to restaurant options in the area. Thank you.

So glad to see this lovely village inn being opened for food and drinks! Lovely atmosphere, delicious food. The fish pie was well provisioned with all sorts of fish., not spurious items hidden in a welter of white sauce with a hint of cheese. So it was delicious. The chicken and tarragon pie was also a triumph and filling. Beers, ciders and drinks all there! Emphasis on local craft suppliers was apparent too, great! Final words, very good overall experience, good value and yes will certainly frequent!

Decided to visit because of our love of the Fork and Chicken. Not disappointed. Nice friendly atmosphere and very welcoming. Varied and interesting food choices. Meals all excellent and clearly freshly prepared. Delicious puddings as well. We would definitely recommend and visit again.

Fantastic food and cosy authentic atmosphere! Delicious food and really accommodating for Gluten Free options too. The chef came out to check everything was okay at the end and the service was excellent.
