About The Queens Head

The Queen’s Head at Great Whittington is one of Northumberland's oldest coaching inns, built in 1701. It's an attractive, stone-built village pub, with open inglenook fires and beamed ceiling. Prior to its reopening in June 2022, the pub was given a light facelift and has an airy feel with a modern twist, whilst maintaining the traditional atmosphere. Snacks and meals are served in the bar, the spacious restaurant and the beautiful garden and you can expect traditional good pub food at the core of the menu along with chef-led daily specials. All produce (wherever possible) is sourced within the North East. The Queen’s Head works closely with the award winning Born Brewery to bring small-batch, quality craft ales to the bar. The wine list is built with similar care and quality focusing on a more traditional 'old world’ led offering. As all food is prepared fresh to order, allergy or dietary requirements can be catered for but advance notice is asked for to ensure the utmost attention and quality is provided.

Lovely little pub serving delicious food. Both had the Sunday roast, beef and lamb were perfectly cooked & came with a selection of vegetables which were perfectly cooked. Husband was happy to find they serve Hawkstone beer! Not many independent pubs left so were thrilled to bits to find this one!

Loved our steak and fish and chips - a perfect Friday night dinner. Everything was cooked to perfection. Great wine, wonderful Hawkstone ales. And fabulous service. We are regular customers because the food is simple and high quality. A lovely rural pub, the way pubs should be!

We both enjoyed the belly pork Sunday lunch, delicious. Quite a wait (30 minutes +) before food was delivered. Only down side were the children running around amongst the tables, of which I pulled one up about it, nobody wants kids running around whilst eating!!

This was our first visit to The Queens Head and we were not disappointed. Set in a lovely, picturesque Northumberland village we were welcomed on our arrival by Isaac in a warm and friendly manner. The atmosphere was cosy and the open fires were welcoming on such a cold day. The Sunday lunch was delicious. Both the roast beef and lamb were very good. There was plenty of food which was tasty and well prepared and it all came with plenty of gravy. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious and highly recommended! The service was attentive and prompt. Overall a lovely dining experience. Thank you. We will definitely visit again as it’s well worth the drive out!

We've been enjoying drinks over Summer at The Queen's Head and had such a lovely welcome, particilarly in view of the young autistic person who sometimes comes with us. So we were really pleased to visit to enjoy a meal with friends. It was great to see it buzzing and have such a great atmosphere. Also, the music later in the eveningvwas really good. We all enjoyed our meals, but can I make a big plea for chips and chicken to be fried in oil separate than that cooking fish? I have a fish allergy so have to be careful and it made my choices really limited - a pity because I hear the chips were lovely. Also, I'm not sure the menu can really indicate the chips or fries as being vegetarian. The waitress, however, was really helpful in checking with the chef. My sausage casserole was very tasty, and I really appreciated the chef going the extra mile and making me saute potatoes which I very much enjoyed. Thanks also to the staff for being so helpful in finding me vegetarian wine that I can drink. Great night, and great pub, and we look forward to going again soon.

Booked for celebration meal with friends on Saturday …. Excited to see chicken Kiev on the menu which 3 of us chose … menu was good and could have selected many of the dishes … Sadly the kitchen weren’t having a good night and all 3 chicken Kiev’s were lacking in garlic stuffing and totally over cooked to cardboard!! The rabbit and bacon pie was tasty but pastry undercooked …. Fortunately we were served by the very attentive owner who recognised it had all gone wrong and he was incredibly apologetic and immediately said there would be no charge for the 3 Kiev meals! He handled the whole situation brilliantly and offered to redo the meals but we declined…. Because of his attitude the evening was not ruined …. He is indeed a massive asset but they can ill afford to lose revenue because the chefs are not up to the mark… A pity as this is such a great venue with fantastic bar and setting ….. nevertheless we will go back again!

Gorgeous, cosy country pub in a beautiful rural setting. Good wine, cocktails and real ale so something for everyone. Excellent food on offer and Sunday lunches are delicious. Well worth a designated driver rota or taxi ride to visit for a perfect day/evening out❤️
