High-end Italian restaurant Rosso opened to great anticipation in 2009 and remains one of the hottest tables you can book in Manchester. The celebrity haunt is located at the top of King Street and has garnered many awards over the last two years including Cheshire and Lancashire Life’s Restaurant of the Year 2010-2011 and the Downtown Business Award for Restaurant of the Year.
The restaurant is housed within a fabulous grade II listed building and the interior is rich and sumptuous with stained glass and marble with dining over two levels. It’s not just about the celeb spotting and people watching here either -- the modern Italian menu offers some fabulous eating with an accomplished wine list too. The atmosphere is electric and on Sundays through to Thursdays live singers add a touch of class and occasion. Lunch sees a competitively priced set menu offering homemade soups, gourmet salads and mains such as Saltimbocca chicken, Gnocchi Sorentina and pan fried Salmone Pepparto with lunch specials that change on a monthly basis.
The evenings see a change of gear with cocktails in full swing and a menu featuring authentic Italian and Mediterranean dishes cooked to order using the best produce and market fresh fish. Starters include fresh oysters on ice, plates of mixed artisan cured meats and hot options such as seared king scallops with leeks and crayfish cream and pan fried king prawns with garlic, chilli and white wine. There is a selection of homespun pizzas and a strong choice of pasta and risotto dishes most of which come in two portion sizes. Fresh fish and seafood are well represented with monkfish, Dover sole, halibut and sea bass, the crowning glory being a whole lobster roasted with chilli, garlic and marjoram. Carnivores can enjoy chicken options, lamb racks and shanks, calves liver, veal and rabbit dishes and prime steaks. Also a point of interest is the accomplished wine list which has to be one of the best in Manchester, focussing on some of the finest and rarest Italian wines and super Tuscans plus a massive Champagne list with plenty of choices by glass, bottle and magnum.
